So she kept to herself a lot and only spent time with her mom, sometimes Jessica, her other grandmother, Annie, and her best friend, Kynlee. And Avery knew she was lucky. At least in the mom department.
They had a fun relationship. Avery used to joke with her mom about everything, and her mom would joke back.
They would spend time together going swimming, shopping, thrifting, going to movies, or just watching them at home.
She loved that they had such a good relationship, and while she sometimes wished her dad was in her life, she wouldn’t change it.
She had all she needed with her mom, Jessica, and grandparents. They didn't live in the same state, but they visited as often as they could and often would go on vacation with Avery and her mom.
Avery loved being at school with Kynlee, but they often looked around and saw many girls acting all crazy because of some boys.
Kynlee would joke with her that they were just boys and that they would be men one day, and then they would be appealing.
Avery highly doubted it. She was waiting for the spark. And she didn't need a boyfriend or throw herself at the good-looking boys to be happy.
She was content with her lot in life.
She didn’t need to date. She just wanted to get out of high school and start working in her chosen career.
She knew that she wanted to do hair, and every single chance she could, she would style her mom's hair.
Kynlee often brought stuff so that Avery could do hers before school and when people asked about her hair, she would tell them, and soon, Avery had a list of girls who wanted their hair braided or colored.
She loved it, and when she started hair school, she already had a list of clients.
She adored learning about hair, nails, and skin as she went to school.
She excelled at it, knowing it was her calling in life.
Kynlee wanted to do nails, and I went to school with her to do that.
It was fun to trade services with her best friend.
When they graduated from school, they started working at a small salon owned by a terrible woman who screwed her clients out of a lot of money or screwed the male clients in the backroom.
That happened more than once, and Avery and Kynlee knew they couldn’t keep working at the salon where they were uncomfortable.
So, they put in the legwork and found a new place where they could open themselves.
One that Jessica was all too happy to help them pay for. She didn’t let them say no when they refused, but they gave in, and Kynlee fell in love with Jessica.
A few of the girls followed them from the horrible salon, and a few from hair school joined them as well; they soon had a busy place.
Avery loved going to work every single day. She and Kynlee would often stay late and do the books and order new products, wanting to keep their girls happy.
They were making good money, and the girls that worked with them were too.
Avery looked around the salon they had built and smiled, “I can’t believe we did this.”
Kynlee looked around the building, “I do. We couldn't stay with Veronica. She was awful. It was horrible working for her. I'm proud of us for leaving. Not everyone would."
Avery grinned at Kynlee, "You are right. We are amazing. This place is going to be great."
Kynlee walked over to her and hugged her, "It is already great."
Avery hugged her friend back, and they locked up, Kynlee got in her car, and with a wave, she drove off.
Avery drove back to her apartment, and her mom was inside, dressed in her new uniform for work.
