She had gotten a passport when she turned eighteen, knowing she wanted to make it to Italy one day, so this was a stroke of luck.
This was too good to be true, so she hurried to her room, opening the computer she used for school and pulled up the first hotel that was put on the paper.
There was a place to ask if she had a reservation and she put in the confirmation number, and then waited, and when the page loaded, it showed off a beautiful hotel room, and it was booked under her name.
She sat back, baffled. Things like this didn’t happen to her.
She never applied for a giveaway, or even heard of one with Rome as the winning destination.
So weird.
Joey knocked on the open door, “Hey, you left this letter downstairs.”
Harper looked at the letter that told her to put her passport number in so she could get her free airline tickets and she looked up at Joey, “I won a giveaway to Rome over Christmas. It’s weird right?”
Joey’s eyebrows rose, “You didn’t try for one?”
Harper shook her head, “I wouldn’t. I don’t have that sort of luck, but besides that, I haven’t heard of a giveaway to Rome. I would have applied, but that was then. Now, I don’t know if I would want to do this. It seems fake, but I put in my confirmation number on this hotel, and I have a room at that hotel.”
Joey’s eyebrows raised even more, “Holy cow. It seems legit.”
Harper was still skeptical, “Really?”
Joey shrugged, “Jackie can look into it with you when she gets home, but maybe it actually is real.”
Harper still wasn’t convinced and heard the engine of a motorcycle outside.
She smiled as she went to the window and saw Jackie pull up on her motorcycle.
The woman was the coolest. She was a cop, drove a motorcycle most of the time and was all around the best person ever.
She had tattoos, piercings and Harper loved her.
And Jackie and Joey were the best people ever. They loved her unconditionally and opened their home to a girl who didn’t have one.
Jackie got off the bike and walked in the house and Joey yelled down, “Come upstairs.”
Jackie yelled back, “I just got home!”
Joey winked at her, and Harper smiled, “I know. Get your butt upstairs.”
Jackie came up the stairs, “Heavens. Let a woman get home from work, would you?”
Joey kissed her quick, “Harper has something to show you.”
Harper showed her the letter, the hotel with her name on it and Jackie’s eyebrows went up, “This seems sketchy.”
Harper bit her lip, “Do you think it’s real?”
Jackie looked at the letter, “Let’s try the plane tickets.”
Harper watched as Jackie put in the information it requested after she gave Jackie her passport.
When the tickets pulled up with her name on them, showing that they were first class seats, Jackie’s eyes went wide, “Where the heck did you sign up for a giveaway like this?”
Harper shook her head, “I didn’t.”
Jackie tapped her chin, “Someone did.”
