“If you think that killer glance is going to make me back off, you’re wrong,” I said. “I want to make sure you get home safely.”

“I think you’re forgetting one thing, soldier. Unlike you, I don’t take orders from anyone!”

“I don’t mean to order you around, I’m just doing what I would do to any of my female friends and family.”

“But I’m not like them,” she said calmly. “I’m a rebel; I go my own way.”

Unimpressed I folded my arms across my chest. “And look where that got you,” I said dryly.

“I don’t need you to come in and rescue me, I do just fine on my own,” she said with an attitude and walked out of Starbucks without looking back. For a moment I watched her cross the parking lot and flip a finger to a driver who almost ran her over.

She might think she was better off without me, but I wasn’t just some random guy she had met in a coffee shop. I was family, and it was my duty to make sure she was safe. No way could I go home without knowing she was going to be all right… so I followed her.
