“Wow, you should see your face,” I said and grinned back. “It’sthatgood, huh?”

“Oh, Chloe, you have no idea.”

I thought back to last night with Adam and nodded slowly. “I think I might.”

Faith walked on and talked over her shoulder. “We’re talking about a summer wedding in Scotland.”

“Why not here?”

“I don’t know. It’s just so romantic and Old-Worldish back there. You’ll love it.”

“All right. And who will be your maid of honor?”

“Do you even have to ask? You, of course. Who else?”

I smiled. “I was just checking to make sure you hadn’t forgotten.”

“What? That we made a pact when we were like ten?”

“Yeah.”

“I didn’t forget – and if you marry Adam you better make me your maid of honor too.”

“Very funny.”

Faith kept walking and waited for me to elaborate.

“He doesn’t want a relationship with me. Or maybe he does… I’m not sure, because he’s not very clear about it.”

“So it was just sex to him, then?” Faith’s voice dropped.

“He said no, but I’m not sure.”

“Just promise me that you won’t settle for someone who isn’t sure. If anything he should be like ‘hell yeah, I want to marry you.’”

“I promise.”

“Good, because you deserve someone who wants you a thousand percent.”

“Thanks.” I blew her a kiss.

“And don’t settle for a control freak like Niko either,” she insisted and there was such acid in the way she pronounced Niko’s name that my radar picked up a distress signal.

“Faith, what happened that night he was arrested?”

“It’s a long story,” she brushed me off.

“I’ve asked you three times and every time you avoid answering my question. Tell me what happened.”

“I’ll tell you when we reach the top and we can sit down for a few minutes.”

The walk up Rattlesnake Ridge took about forty-five minutes and although we chit-chatted about different things like our parents, her trip to Scotland, and my plans of setting up a foundation, the thing that had happened between her and Niko was constantly on my mind.

“Here we are,” Faith said when we finally reached the peak. “Isn’t it pretty?”

We stood for a second, just taking in the view with Mount Rainier in the background and the mountaintops all around.

“I wish there were no cloud at all,” I said and pulled out my phone to snap pictures of the view.
