He’s not going to pick up.

“Hello?” Adam’s deep voice answered.

I opened my mouth to speak but an iron ring around my neck made it impossible to get a word out.

“Chloe, is that you?” There were people in the background and music playing.

I shut my eyes and forced a single word out. “Hey.”

“Hey.”

“Ehmm… I just wanted you to know I’m transferring the money.”

“Hang on, I can’t hear you. Did you say you’re transferring money?”

“Uh-huh. And actually I earmarked some of it to fund…” I tensed when I heard a woman shouting in the background.: “Don’t leave, Adam. Come back here, I’m not done with you.”

“Chloe… what were you saying? I didn’t get that last part.”

“It’s okay, I can hear you’re busy. Don’t worry about it.” I hung up, my hands trembling with disappointment. Here I was missing Adam like crazy and feeling lonely and miserable, while he was out partying with some other woman. How naïve of me to think he had ever cared for me to begin with.

With angry tears running down my cheeks, I held up one of the papers I had just signed, wanting to tear it apart.

Don’t!The calm voice of reason that came from within had me stunned.Nothing has changed. I already knew that he didn’t want me but this isn’t about him and me; it’s much bigger than that. I’m bigger than that.

But my new sense of maturity only reached so far; when Adam called me back, I refused to answer and blocked his number again.

“It wasn’t meant to be,” I whispered to myself. “Just let go already.”
