There were so many things I wished I had thought about asking her, the most important ones being:
What time will Adam be here?
How long will you be gone?
The hours felt endless, and every sound outside made me sure bears or wolves were coming to get me.
Max wasn’t much company since he just stayed in his spot and started snoring loudly.
At least I could write an email to Faith telling her that I’d arrived safely. At first I wrote a long complaining email about the primitive conditions in the cabin. I described the outside toilet, the absence of a shower, the limited access to something as fundamental as electricity twenty-four/seven, but then I stopped.
Faith already worried enough about me as it was. She didn’t need a long whining report on how miserable I was.
I deleted it all and wrote a new and much shorter message.
Hey Sis,
Just checking in so you know I’m alive.
You were right, Onava is amazing and it’s good for me to take a break. The forest is beautiful and I feel better already.
Onava has put me on detox from all things related to social media. I’m not even allowed to answer fan mail.
But, since I’m alone and everything is quiet now, I’m sneaking a short email to you.
Just so you know, Onava was called away to Canada where her mother is dying.
She has called for her nephew to get here and “work” with me. His name is Adam Black, and according to Onava he’s a respected medicine man too.
There’s a picture of him on the wall, and he looks familiar to me. I hope he’s not the guy I met at Christian’s birthday party last January.
Take care, sweet sister, and let’s get together for New Year’s. By then I should be ready to go back to civilization, I hope!
Love, Chloe
PS: There are black bears here… I’m pretty freaked out about it, being alone and all. According to Onava they don’t eat people, but they still kill them on occasion. So I should probably tell you thatI love you, just in case...
