“I don’t want to take up much of your precious time,” Adam said in that deep sexy voice of his. “But I do need your signature on some papers, and I figured it would be easier to just have you sign them today than to mail them to LA.”

“Oh… I see.” For a moment I’d hoped he wanted to talk to me in private because he wanted to apologize, but clearly that wasn’t the case.

He handed me a folder and a pen.

I looked around, searching for a surface I could use to sign the papers.

“You can use my back,” he offered and turned his back on me.

“Thank you,” I muttered and stepped close enough to place the papers against his back.

The scent of Adam hit me smack in the face, and for a second I closed my eyes and fought back the feelings of sorrow that had been with me since the day we split.

“All done,” I said and handed him the folder and pen.

Adam looked down and an awkward silence filled the space between us.

“Well, if that was all…” I was about to leave when he said, “I should congratulate you on your new engagement.” He didn’t look happy at all.

“Thank you, but it’s just rumors that help sell magazines,” I clarified.

“So you’re not expecting a love child either?” His eyes fell to my belly.

I shook my head. “No, I’m not.”

Adam seemed unsure what to say and ended up with: “Well, you look good and I hope you’re happy.”

When he turned to leave it burst out of me. “No goodbyes this time either?”

The way he froze to the spot and slowly turned with an expression of suppressed anger made me take a small step back.

“Now you want to say goodbye?” he said in a low rumble.

“Itisthe polite thing to do, Adam.”

He took a step closer and looked huge when he towered over me. “Are you accusingmeof being rude?”

“I’m just saying it was a rude thing to leave without a goodbye.”

“Is that supposed to be an apology?” He narrowed his eyes.

“No.” I wrinkled my forehead. “Why would I apologize to you when you were the one leaving without a goodbye?”

“Are you high?” he accused me.

“No, I’m not high,” I shrieked, offended.

Adam shifted his weight from one foot to the other and waved a finger at me. “You left your apartment without a trace and wouldn’t even pick up your phone when I called you, so don’t give me shit about not saying goodbye.”

“I did no such thing.” Provoked by his anger, I placed my hands on my hips and pushed my jaw out. “When I came out from the bathroom you were gone.”

His eyes widened. “Because I took Max out.”

“Ha,” I scoffed. “Nice try, medicine man, but I waited for you a long time and I went through the apartment. All your things were gone.” With a finger pointing to his nose I sneered. “You left, admit it.”

“Agrhh,” Adam spun around and dragged his hands through his hair in frustration. “Tell me you’re not that stupid.”

“Don’t you call me stupid.”
