CHAPTER 23

Getting a Ride

Chloe

“Adam,” I called out as I ran across the parking lot, hoping to catch him before he took off.

Adam was already in his truck and had turned the ignition on when I knocked on his window.

With a frown he rolled his window down. “Hey, Faith, is something wrong?”

“Can I get a ride to the gallery?” I asked in a pleading tone of voice.

He looked back toward the theater where the fundraiser had been held. “Where’s Logan?”

“We got into an argument and I just need a little break from him.”

“But won’t he worry if you take off with another guy?”

I shook my head. “I said I needed to talk to you about Chloe, so I’m sure he knows you’re protected under the sister clause.”

Adam took a moment but then he nodded. “Okay, I can give you a ride, but the passenger door is broken so you have to crawl over the driver’s seat.” He got out and allowed room for me to get in.

“Have you considered getting a newer truck?” I asked.

“I’ve been saving for a while,” he said and started talking about the model he had his eye on.

“So if I ever need something heavy moved, you and your new truck can help me,” I joked.

“Sure. But what is it with you and Logan?”

“Oh, it’s nothing. Every couple has their issues, right?” I was trying to get the seatbelt to work.

“Here, let me help you,” he said and leaned over to get it to click in the lock.

“Thanks.” I smiled at him and sat back as he pulled out from the parking lot.

“Do you know the way to the gallery?” he asked.

“Uh-huh, it’s on Pike Street.”

“Got it.”

“So,” I said and felt my heard pound in my chest. “How was it seeing Chloe tonight?”

Adam gave me a sideways glance. “Okay, I guess.”

“Do you miss her?”

“Sometimes.”

“Do you regret leaving her without saying goodbye to her?”

“I didn’t,” he said firmly.

“Chloe told me you told her that you were just washing your clothes, but you can tell me the truth, Adam. I promise I won’t tell her. You did that day, didn’t you?”

“No, I didn’t.”
