“Yeah… the actor.”

“They’re not a couple.”

He narrowed his eyes. “She told me she isn’t engaged to him, but they’re dating, right?”

“Yeah, but it’s a sham.”

He looked doubtful. “I don’t know. They sure look cozy in the pictures I’ve seen.”

I sighed. “Remember all the controversy about Cleo being promiscuous and into threesomes?”

Adam scoffed. “That was just ridiculous.”

“I know, but Liam was part of the damage control that her agent brought in.”

“Why?”

“Because he’s Hollywood’s good guy, with the cleanest image you can find. Dating him was good for her reputation.”

“So she doesn’t love him?”

“Nooo…” I laughed. “I just told you, it’s all fake. There’s nothing between them but a publicity stunt. He’s not into her and she’s not into him.”

“Are you sure? I mean the pictures…”

“Adam…” I cut him off, lowered my head, and gave him the listen-to-me look.

“What?”

“Chloe and Liam are actors. They’re good at faking it.”

“Ohh, right,” he murmured with a wrinkled forehead. “I get it. You think she faked it with me too?”

“Nooo.” I shook my hands and head vehemently, wanting badly to remedy the sickened expression on his face. “I know she didn’t fake it with you.”

He looked from my hands to my face. “You can’t know that for sure.”

“Yes, I can.” I couldn’t keep up the façade a second longer. The idea that Adam would doubt my sincerity and the realness of what we had shared was disturbing to me.

“Because I’m Chloe.”

Adam pulled back. “That’s not even funny, Faith.”

“I’m not Faith. I’m Chloe.”

He looked down at my clothing and shook his head. “Chloe was wearing a little black dress and high heels.”

“We swapped clothes.”

Adam shook his head. “Nice try,” he said. “But I’m not that stupid. Look, if you know Chloe was just playing me you can say it. There’s no need for you to pretend to be her to spare my feelings.”

“I’m not pretending. Here, I’ll prove it to you,” I said.

She moved closer and took my hand. “Feel my energy,” she said and looked deeply into my eyes.
