But I do!
I ran to get my phone in my bag and snapped a few photos of him. I even got one of him from the front when he squatted down to fill his arms with firewood.
Following his movements when he carried in firewood and stoked the fire as if it were second nature to him, I wondered what it would take to make Adam smile for real. He always looked so goddamn serious.
“Okay, are you ready?” He turned and dusted off his hands.
“For the healing?”
“Yes.”
“Sure, where do you want me?” I asked and his small smile made heat stream through me.
“I want you on the bed or the couch,” he answered calmly.
Had he already started the healing or was it just the connection between us that made me all giddy inside? Something was definitely happening between us. I hadn’t used the best way to phrase my question, but he had followed up and repeated the phrase that we both knew could be interpreted differently. If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought he flirted with me.
I chose the bed – maybe because secretly I wished something would happen between us.
“Thank you for your compliment before,” I said softly and lay down. “I would like to offer you one in return.”
Adam washed his hands by the kitchen sink and came to sit on the bed next to me.
“Don’t you want to know what my compliment is?” I asked.
He shrugged. “If you wish to give it to me, you’re free to do so, but I don’t need it to feel good about myself.”
I ignored his arrogant comment. “I think you’re pretty tough for sticking around too. You could have left me after our fight, but you’ve never threatened to leave.”
He didn’t reply to my praise so I elaborated: “Niko always threatened me that he would leave.”
“Because he knew you were scared of being alone.” Adam said matter-of-factly. “I don’t make empty threats and I don’t try to manipulate you to get my will.”
“And I like that about you,” I said. “You’re very mature.”
The edges around his eyes softened. “Thank you. Now close your eyes.” He took my hand and moved closer, our hips touching.
“Wait,” I opened my eyes again. “Before you begin, won’t you explain to me what it is you do?”
“All right. The best way I can describe it that I work with your energy.”
“Yes, but how?”
“I have the capacity to speed up my own energy, and to transfer it to my patients as a sort of force field.” He paused. “Think of someone tuning an instrument. Your body should have a free flow of energy, so I’m looking for blockages. It’s proven that your cells constantly renew and heal themselves, so my job is to fine-tune the energetic flow your body needs to do the healing itself. In reality I don’t heal you. Your body does that. I just enter your flow long enough to calibrate the machinery and make sure the cells are getting the needed energy.”
“And what happens in your mind while you do this?” I asked.
“I’m concentrating on you and sometimes I see colors.”
“Wow… that’s kinda cool.”
“Are you ready?”
“Yes.” I smiled and closed my eyes, squeezing his hand a little tighter.
“Listen to my voice and feel the tingling in your hand. Take three deep breaths and relax, Chloe. You’re safe with me and I’m going to make you feel good.”
I took three deep breaths in succession and felt every part of my body start to relax.
