Faith came to sit next to me and wanted to know more about my background as a healer. She was kind and easy to talk to, and I almost regretted when the limousine came to a halt and we had to get out.

“Is this where Christian lives?” I asked and stared up at the large mansion in front of us.

“Yes.” Chloe was already leading the way to the impressive double front doors. “He and Melody just moved in recently. Isn’t it gorgeous?”

I tilted my head back to take in the mansion and shook my head slightly. This was a long way from how my friends and I lived back home. This house was like the one Chloe had taken me to see the other day.

“Come on,” Andrew said and patted my shoulder as he passed me. “Ah heard the food is guid here.”

My mood rose just from seeing Derek and Andrew rubbing shoulders and snickering all the way up to the door. It was clear they saw this whole experience as an adventure, and their enthusiastic energy and joy about the whole evening rubbed off on me.

Inside we were met by Christian, who gave me a big hug. “It’s good to see you again, Adam.”

“Same to you. Is Violet here?”

I had only just mentioned her name before she came to hug me. “Hey, Adam, I was so happy to hear that you were coming tonight.” She looked pretty with her long brown hair and fine features, but the thing that had always intrigued me about Violet was her eyes. They were magnetic and expressive, with a warmth that was unique. Some people found her strange for being a psychic medium, but not me. I too had abilities that many didn’t understand and some even questioned.

Her husband Jake had been a major sceptic and I supposed that he still was to some degree. Violet and I rarely spoke about him. so all I knew was that he was a talented scientist and that she had been in love with him since she was a child.

“Come on.” Violet led me to the impressive living room where she introduced me to the hostess Melody, and the rest of the guests.

“My good friend Cia and her husband Gabriel,” Violet introduced me. “They live in Missouri, where Gabriel works as a combat trainer in the military.”

Gabriel looked the spitting image of a strong soldier except for his hair; it wasn’t machine short.

“Actually, I train battle engineers,” he said and shook my hand.”

“Oh, that’s nice.” I gave him an appraising nod.

“And this is my good friend Cia,” Violet said and I took in the strawberry-blond young woman before me. Even though she gave me a smile I sensed a guardedness about her and instinctively knew she was the opposite of an open book.

“Of course you remember Jake, my husband, don’t you?”

Jake reached out to shake my hand and he was just about to say something when a loud sound from the foyer made us look up.

“Oh, here comes Darren,” Violet said with a beaming smile. “You’ll like him, he’s very entertaining.”

It was the sound of bagpipes that had us all exchanging glances, and my eyes grew big when a tall, slightly chubby man with hipster beard and his dark blond hair in a man bun came in. He was wearing a kilt with knee-long socks, a white shirt, and a black tuxedo jacket while holding his phone high up in the air.

“Happy New Year,” he shouted over the bagpipe music playing from his phone.

Violet hurried to hug him and he picked her up from the floor in a giant hug. “My lovely purple flower.”

I was still staring in fascination when he exclaimed loudly, “Where are the handsome Highlanders you promised me?”

Violet blushed but turned to look over the crowd and all our eyes went to the three blond men who were gaping at Darren.

“Ahh, no kilts?” Darren said and turned off the music with a hint of disappointment before he strutted over to stand in front of Logan, Andrew, and Derek. “Well, don’t worry, as you can see I have you covered.” He pointed down to his kilt. “What do you think? I carefully selected my attire for this festive night, do you approve?”

Derek was the first to find his voice. “Aye. Ye look very strapping.”

His brother’s followed with polite compliments. “Are ye Scottish too?” Logan asked.

“Nope, I’m afraid not,” and then he grinned. “But I’m open for dual citizenship if it gets to that.” He spoke with a pronounced lisp that would tell anyone within hearing distance that he was gay. And still Derek frowned and leaned over to Andrew, whispering, “What does he mean by that?”

Andrew shook his head as to signal “Not now.”

And that’s when Darren spotted me. His eyebrows shot upward and he made a small whistle. “Oh my,” he said in a dramatic voice and came closer. “Who is this gorgeous man?”
