River had picked up her sandwich but shook her head at him. “Did you look at the paper I sent you on vegan athletes?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I love meat.”

“Meat isn’t meant for human consumption.”

Nathan rolled his eyes. “River, you know I love you, but you have to stop sniffing that nail polish. It’s making you say stupid things.”

“It’s not!” she insisted before she took a bite of her sandwich.

I said, “I’m good, Charles, but thanks.”

“What about Jolene? Do you think she’s hungry?”

“I asked her, and she said she and Nathan had a late lunch. She’s resting until dinner.”

Nathan looked at his Fitbit. “It’s been three hours since we had lunch, and she didn’t eat much.”

“Maybe the jet lag or her concussion is taking away her appetite.”

“Did you take her to Rock of Cashel like we suggested?” Charles asked Nathan.

“I did. She loved it.”

“Oh, Rock of Cashel is my favorite castle. Why didn’t you bring me?” River complained.

“Because you weren’t here when we left at eight this morning.”

“Then you should have waited, and we could have done it on Sunday.”

“You can take her to a different castle on Sunday. Jolene will be excited to get out and see more of Ireland.”

Chewing on her sandwich, River looked thoughtful. After swallowing, she asked, “Did you take her to Birr Castle?”

“No.”

“Then maybe we can go there on Sunday. I wish it were summer so that we could do a picnic.”

“You can do a picnic,” Charles pointed out.

She arched a brow. “Picnics in February aren’t any fun in Ireland. It’s too cold.”

“People have picnics in the snow. It’s a matter of attitude.”

“That reminds me.” Nathan placed his hand on River’s shoulder. “I’m counting on you to help me get everyone to go out dancing tomorrow night. I’ve already promised Jolene that we’re taking her to Temple Bar. Liv even said she would go, and Damian too, but only if we convince Lumi to go with us.”

River snorted. “I’m not a magician.”

“Maximum said he’d go,” I told Nathan because I’d already spoken to Maximum about it before he went on a walk with Liv and Saffron.

Nathan took the plate with the sandwich Charles handed him. “Thank you.” Turning to me, he said, “Atlas, can’t you talk Lumi into it?”

“I doubt it.”

River pushed at my shoulder. “Honestly, you’ve been studying mind control for ten years. It’s time you used it for good.”
