I stared at her and felt dizzy from the alcohol. “When did ye grow so hard?”

She shrugged. “My days as an immature and emotional child ended the day you married. I’m not that lovesick girl anymore. She’s gone, Damian.”

“Is she ever coming back?”

“No.”

For a moment, we stood in silence until Lumi released a heavy sigh. “It’s late, and I think it’s best if you leave now.”

“What if I divorced Siobhan?”

Lumi put a hand to my back and nudged me to the door. “We both know that you’d never do that.” She opened the door, and I exited her apartment before turning around to face her.

“I would! For ye, I would!”

“I doubt that. Good night Damian.” She began closing the door when I put my hand on it to stop her.

“At least tell me if ye love him.”

Lumi touched her forehead before looking me square in the eyes. “I do. I’m finally in a good place with a man who adores me.”

“Iadore ye.”

“Stop, Damian. Your friendship is important to me, which is why I’ll pretend this never happened. Now go!”

After she closed her door, I stood with sagging shoulders, fighting my instinct to pound my fist on her door and get back in there to convince her that our love was extraordinary.

Once, I’d been Lumi’s world, but now her rejection was sinking in like it was the fuckingTitanic.

It’s best if you leave now!

As with all Lumi’s communications, her rejection had been clear.

She was over me, but I couldn’t imagine that I would ever get over her.
