My body felt paralyzed from all the truth bombs Jolene had detonated in the last hour, but I managed to point in the direction of the kitchen counter. “It’s over there.”
Jolene walked over to pick up the key, and then she took out a box from her bag. “The key goes in here. It’s a time box, and I’m setting it for one hundred and eight hours, which is four-and-a-half days. When you wake up Friday morning, the box will be unlocked.”
“Why Friday mornin’? We began the experiment on Thursday night.”
“Correct, but we told you from the beginning that all time apart would be applied to the last day, and so I’m adding five hours, which will end this project at one a.m. on Friday morning.” Jolene placed the time box in the middle of the table.
“Give me a hug, sis.” Atlas leaned in. “We’re flying to Norway tonight, but we’ll be back to celebrate your birthday on Saturday.”
“What’s in Norway?” I asked.
“Beautiful nature and Northern lights, if we’re lucky.”
When Jolene and Atlas left Damian’s apartment, the place fell quiet as we stood by the door side by side.
“We should clean up,” I muttered and nodded to the table with all the dishes, but my words might as well have been directed at the emotional mess that hung in the air between us.
