“I got upset because your compliment reinforced the feeling I’ve carried within me since our first time together: that I wasn’t good enough.”

Leaning my forehead against hers, I spoke in a firm tone. “Lumi, listen to me. I can’t change the past, but if I could go back and beat myself up for hurting ye all those years ago, I would! Ye did nothin’ wrong! Yer body was that of a goddess, and yer innocence was a rush to me. It was a matter of bad timing.”

A smile tipped the corner of Lumi’s lips. “You don’t need to apologize. I’m just explaining why I overreacted that day and letting you know that I don’t have a problem with you complimenting me.”

I smiled. “Look at us communicatin’ and all.”

Lumi snaked an arm around me and hugged me. “I feel so much lighter and happier now.”

“Me too. Except… What did Logan want?”

“Logan?”

“I saw he texted ye.”

“Oh.” Lumi turned to her desk, picked up her phone, and used her thumb to unlock it. She took a second, and then she handed it to me with a small shrug before she went around her desk.

I was busy reading Logan’s text, so she had to pull on the cuffs for me to follow her far enough that she could reach her computer.

Logan had sent Lumi a selfie showing him leaning against a car wearing his sunglasses and uniform. In his text, he wrote, “What about that dinner? Are you still handcuffed, or would you be free tomorrow night?”

I scoffed. “Can I answer him?”

“No.” Lumi raised her brow and reached out her hand. “No more insults from my phone. Give it to me.”

“On one condition.” I held the phone away from her. “This afternoon, we’re going to my workplace.”

Lumi was reading emails on her screen, and it took her a second to respond. “Wait, you mean the ERU headquarters?”

“No, I can’t bring outsiders into the headquarters, but there’s a celebration at the Pierced Pig at five. It’s the pub around the corner from the headquarters.” I gave her back her phone. “I want us to go together.”

Lumi took a last glance at her computer, and then she stood up again. “Yes, it’s fine, as long as you promise me that our going has nothing to do with Logan.”

I skewed my mouth, refusing to give her that promise. Of course it was because of Logan. I wanted him to know that Lumi was mine now.

“Damian, you’re not going to embarrass me by bringing up the dick pic, are you?”

“Naw.” I inhaled sharply through my nose and nodded toward the clock on the wall. “Didn’t ye say ye had another meeting to attend?”

Lumi rose on her toes to press her nose against mine. “I do, and this time you’d better not look at me with that sexual hunger. I can’t concentrate on my work when you do.”

I gently bit down on her lower lip, growled low, and squeezed her butt. “Don’t worry. I’ll behave civilized when we’re around others.”

There was a flirtatious smile on her pretty lips when she gathered a stack of papers. “Then let’s be around others as little as possible. I like your hunger.”

Our lips and tongues did a dirty dance in her office, and my belly did a wild flip again. This was it!

“This is how it’s supposed to feel,” I muttered into her mouth.

“I know.” Lumi gave me a dreamy look before she blinked a few times and stepped backward. “But I have to focus now, and you keep distracting me.”

She brushed her hands down her clothes and did a check of her hair before she moved to the door.

“Stall a second.” I didn’t move.

“What’s wrong?”

“Biology is what’s wrong.”
