“Why not?”
“Okay.”
I got the last things from the car and came back to see her sitting on one of the beds. “Wanna test this mattress with me?”
With a single tip of my head, I joined her on the bed. It didn’t feel as natural as it did on Saturday night, but we’d been drinking then.
Serena stayed on top of the duvet but covered her legs with a throw-over. I positioned myself on my back with my hands behind my neck.
“Comfortable?”
“The mattress is a little hard, but that’s okay.” She was on her side with her hands tucked under her chin.
“So, do you choose this room?” I turned my face to meet her eyes.
“Unless you want it?”
“Hey, I gave you first dibs.”
“It’s funny. I’ve noticed that you use a few American expressions.”
“Both of my adoptive parents are American.”
“They are?”
“Yes.”
“But I thought you grew up in Dublin.”
“I did. Liv and Charles still live there, but they haven’t lost their American accent. I suppose it’s inevitable that I picked up on some of their sayings.”
“I like how you speak. You don’t curse much for a man.”
I turned on my side, mirroring her. “I try not to, but once I get started, it’s bad. When I’m with the lads, and we’re drunk, I’ll drop F-bombs like I’m a Northrop Grumman.”
“What’s that?”
“It’s a bomber aircraft.”
“Nathan…”
“Yes?”
“I don’t think we’re going to get any sleep. My heart is beating faster with you so close.”
“Mine too.” As soon as she admitted it, my eyes fell to her lips. I wanted to kiss her so badly.
Serena lay completely still when I touched her copper-colored hair, but as soon as I leaned closer and my lips touched hers, it was as if a small explosion of desire brought us right back to where we’d broken things off on Saturday night.
I had counted on us having time to talk before I would even consider making a move on her, but my ability to reason around Serena was impaired.
“God, you’re like magic mushrooms,” I muttered into her mouth.
She panted from our passionate kissing and pulled back to look at me.
“I don’t know what it is about you, but it’s like you’re this forbidden thing that pulls me in like an addiction.”
“Is that a complaint?” Serena lifted her knee up to my hip and pressed against me.
