Nathan: Please don’t kill him and go to jail. That would spoil my plans for our future together.
Serena: I wouldn’t do it myself. Know any assassins, or could you put those skills of yours to use?
I jerked my head back and frowned as I waited for the little bubbles on my screen to result in more words.
Serena: Bad joke – sorry!
I let out the breath I’d held back and quickly texted back.
Nathan: I knew that.
Around me, friends and strangers were partying, but I would rather be in a bubble with Serena even though she was across the world.
Nathan: I miss you so fucking much!
A selfie came through of Serena, blowing me a kiss. My fingers enlarged the photo when I touched the screen, as if they could stroke her soft skin. Either her black eye was fading in color, or she had covered it with make-up, but either way, my chest tightened with longing.
Nathan: You have no idea how badly I want to kiss those beautiful lips of yours.
Serena must have gotten distracted again because she left me hanging and didn’t respond. Once again, it caused another dive on the emotional rollercoaster that I’d been on lately. This was exactly why long-distance relationships would never work for me. I needed to be close to my woman, and right now there was a whole ocean and a world of haters between us.
