I sag with relief––thrilled and terrified at the same time.

“Thank heavens,” Garrett murmurs under his breath.

Feeling bad for my new friend, I turn to gauge Holly’s expression. It’s obvious that she’s disappointed, even though she’s trying hard to hide it.

“I’m sorry,” I say to her, truly hating the way this happened.

“It’s okay,” she assures me quietly. In a voice loud enough for the entire group to hear, she lets me off the hook by saying, “It’s easy to see that Charity is Garrett’s true match. I’m sure I’ll get my turn another month.”

“Thank you.” I mouth the words to her as Garrett takes my hand to help me off the tall bar stool.

Holly gives me a genuine smile before saying, “You two have fun!”

“Oh, we will,” Garrett answers. When he waggles his eyebrows suggestively, the ladies around the two tables whoop and whistle with excitement.

I shake my head at the silly man for getting them all stirred up. Proving that he hasn’t changed a bit, Garrett swoops me off my feet and into his strong arms to carry me outside. The women go wild over this outlandish, chivalrous gesture.

Garrett kicks the door of the bar open and carries me away for what is sure to be a night neither of us will ever forget.
