I freeze.

The male, Wraith by his voice, doesn’t turn around. “I have no desire to fight you. Steel doesn’t either. He’s just not thinking shit through right now.”

Still, I remain motionless, silent.

He pivots in place, flashing his midnight tactical gear and eyes that are so pale blue, they are almost white.

“There is a tunnel two halls up,” he says. “Take the girl and leave.”

My hands lower back to my sides. “Why are you helping us?”

His lips twist. “I would say I’m not. Get out on your own.”

“You work for Ralf?”

The garish smile fades as fast as it came, leaving the male more grim than death. “My the Fae have good hearing. Better than I ever knew.”

I glare. “Cut the bullshit,” I tell him. “There have been a string of Fae disappearances in Lock Lake. Three Fae lords for the Tennessee Sith.” I watch his expression, but there is no change. “The girl with me … One of them is her brother. Are they here?”

“That’s above my pay grade, Fae.” The words are just as blank as his face.

My teeth bare. “Fine. I’ll find them on my own.” I extend my hand past the corner and Amoret’s warm palm slides into mine. Her touch is soothing, taming the rage inside me. Her pretty eyes are huge in her heart-shaped face as I tug her to me. The male watches as she crowds into my side.

We skirt the wall around him, her heat behind me, my body her living shield.

He tracks us as we head down the hall, and only at the next corner does he turn away.

Amoret’s hand tightens in mine. “How sure are you that he isn’t going to alert the others?”

I snort and glance down at her. “I’m not. Which is why we aren’t leaving. Yet.”

Her pretty face pales. “Why?”

My knuckles caress the smooth silk of her cheek. “Because we got to get your brother first.”

The way her face lights up is enough to send me to my knees. Or to pray to a God I don’t believe in for a few minutes of peace and a bed. “Branwen is here?” she asks.

I lay a kiss over the back of her hand and tug her behind me. “I don’t know for sure,” I breathe, “but we are damn sure going to find out.”
