He tsks at me. “Now, Fire Fae. We both know you run …hotterthan all that.”
I lunge over the floor and cool arms bind my torso, hauling me backward as every breath of air saws through my lungs. My breathing is loud in the quiet club. So is the angry thrum of my heart.
“Caine, go … check the fucking alley or something,” Ruin rumbles from behind me.
“Uh, Ruin,” Tanner begins, “there is no alley.”
The cap scoffs. “Then go guard the fucking door.”
Caine glowers, his face closing off into hard lines. “Fine.” His crimson gaze locks with mine. “You decide you want help with what you’re feeling—or maybe a few pointers, you know where I am.”
I balk in Ruin’s hold, and his hands tighten on my skin. “Caine!” he snaps.
The demon stalks off without another word as the silence stretches. Ruin keeps me locked against his chest as my heart calms. Only once T gives a brief nod, does the vampire release me.
I shrug away from them both, eyes locked on the farthest corner of the room.
My head rolls on my shoulders, and my fingers itch for a smoke. There is nothing stopping me from lighting one. Except, I’ll have to go back to the hotel soon. And I need all my wits around me just to be in the same room with Amoret.
And Black Dream isn’t the way to ensure that.
They stay quiet, letting the fire in me still.
“Can you do this?” Ruin asks.
I press my tongue to my back teeth, stopping my retort. It takes every ounce of control I have to switch the meter on without melting it in my grasp. “I’m good,” I breathe, eyes locked on the little white device in my hand. I exhale again and head to the far side of the room to start scanning. “I’m good.”
