My head whips toward the room.

Scrambling to my feet, I rush into my room and lift the phone. The whole thing is heavy. Several pounds, at least.

A recurved piece of plastic rattles on top. I settle the phone in the crook of my arm and lift the other piece. It is much lighter, with small holes in two round spheres on each end.

“Hello?” I say into both sides.

Nothing.

Wait.

Staring at the heavier section, I find twelve silver buttons laden with numbers and symbols.

I locate the star and the nine and press both.

“This is Wilfred. How may I help you, Lady Amoret?” The voice is masculine from one end of the recurved piece. I hold it to my ear. “Lady Amoret?”

I pull it away as his soft tone echoes into my head. “Yes,” I say, voice hopefully loud enough for him to hear. “I need clothes.”

There is a pause. “Of course, Lady Amoret. Would you like me to send for some?”

I glance down at my grass flecked, damp legs and smile. “Yes. Human clothes. Pretty ones.”

His chuckle is polite but pleased. “They will arrive before you awaken. Will that be all?”

I mull that over. “Can you get word to Gage—I mean Captain Whitehorn, that an envoy member will accompany him in the morning?”

“As you like, Lady Amoret.”

“Thank you, Wilfred. That’s all.”

“I am happy to help, and if you need anything else, do not hesitate to call me again. Have a good evening, my lady.”

I settle the phone back on the nightstand and rush to go shower.

Because dawn will come early indeed.
