“I don’t think the heir is that stupid,” I say, frowning.
“Oh he’s not. But he’s arrogant as fuck.” Caine peers down at me. “And he won’t be able to resist your injured humanity.”
I make a face at him. “I have to play the damsel in distress?”
His smile makes my stomach flutter. “Somehow I don’t think I’m Sanchez’s type.”
Rolling my eyes, I sigh. “Fine.”
“We get him alone and shake him down for whatever we can.” His hand flexes around mine. “Then I can portal jump us out before anyone knows we are gone.”
I look at him. “Portal jump?”
He flashes me a wicked grin and pulls me faster through the trees.
The first thing you notice about the heir to the Miami colony is his dark eyes. The second thing you notice?
The arrogance.
Tomas Sanchez is an average size vamp with a movie star attitude. And the smirk he gives Caine makes me want to claw up his pretty tan face.
“Caine, what brings you all the way out here so early?” Tomas asks, his tone all swagger and soft accent as he hovers just outside of the sunlight.
Caine’s expression never morphs from cool anger. “Tomas, have you hear from Ruin or the others? I’ve been staying with Onyx while she healed, and they fucking checked out of the suite.” He tugs me up beside him and I am careful to emphasize my limp and even let out a frail moan of pain.
Tomas blinks. It’s the only outward sign of his surprise. “No, I’m sorry,” Tomas says, his focus shifting over me. “I was unaware you split up.”
I try to smile. “The team is nice and all, but I’m used to my space,” I lie. My heart stays steady. Even.
The heir nods slowly. “I see.” He steps back from his office door. “Well, I am sure we can locate them.”
Only the tightening of Caine’s hand tells me just how pissed he is.
Tomas leads the way inside and Caine ushers me to a red leather chair near the window. I drop into it gratefully and that at least is not faked. Two guards lean near the door, but it doesn’t appear to bother Caine.
He cups my face and makes sure Tomas sees it from across the room. The bait is set. An Asmodean with his donor.
Tomas coughs delicately. “When was the last time you spoke with Ruin?” he asks.
Caine turns from me. “Not since Onyx’s attack at Helios’ house.” He pulls from me. “I took her back to her hotel after Horan did what he could to heal her. Thought it would give her time to rest while you and Ruin corroborated.”
“I see,” Tomas murmurs.
“We were woken up last night by a group of levithan demons.” Caine gestures at me. “Onyx was injured again, and I need Horan’s help. But I have no idea where they are.”
I sag a bit for dramatic effect.
“Was there another hit in play for the cases?” Caine asks.
Tomas motions to his guards and they step from the room, closing the door behind. My heart starts to speed and the heir peers at me. Gripping my thigh, I let out another groan and force out a harsh puff of air.
“Damn shit twinges every few minutes,” I manage.
Though he still appears uncertain, Tomas turns to Caine. “I fear there was, yes,” he mutters. “I advised Ruin against going in. But he insisted. I fear his vengeance on this drug is clouding his head.”
Caine’s shoulders tense under his dark shirt. And if ever we needed proof of the heir’s alliance with Helios, it was in those few words.
“I have not heard from him in several hours,” he tells Caine, dropping behind his desk. “I can give you the address. Perhaps you can find them in the area.”
