Caine stalks to him. “Thank you, Tomas.” His voice is strong, audible. “I appreciate your aid.”
The heir waves it away with a casual flick of his wrist. He reaches for a pen and Caine is on him.
Before the male has time to speak, Caine has him by the throat. The heir’s eyes spin to gold as he tries to break free. With a small snap, red bands of magick bind him in place. Caine leans over him, his fingers tightening. With another snap, flame scrolls over the door, blocking out any further sounds. And I know we have moments.
I climb to my feet and join him at the desk.
“I know you sold us out, Sanchez,” Caine growls. “Your buddy’s guards are all brawn and no brain. All it took was a little of this,” He holds out his palm, mage light crackling between his fingertips, “and they sang like fucking canaries.”
Tomas brows narrow. “What do you want?” he gasps.
“I want to know where the fucking cases are?” Caine demands. “And I want Helios’ head on a pike. But for right now, I will enjoy ruining his fucking day.”
“You can’t go after him, you can’t—” The heir chokes off.
“I can and I will,” Caine snarls. “And you are going to tell me where the fucking cases are or I’m going to burn your favorite part of your body to ash.”
The heir turns white.
Caine’s smile is evil made flesh, and I suddenly realize how their colony leader has held a free territory for so long. The whole damn team is deadly. Violence in jeans.
They aren’t knights. Or textbook good guys.
But they are the guys you want on your side.
I shiver and can’t help wanting Caine even more.
Tomas swallows. “If I tell you, I will be as good as dead. Helios does not tolerate insubordination.”
Caine gets right in his face. “If you don’t tell me or if you fuck me over, I’ll let everyone know who warned Helios to move the cases. And if you don’t think the Council has ways of finding out the truth, you should ask Ruin about the Fae that oversaw his trial.” Caine smirks. “Your life will be over, regardless.”
They stare at each other and the silence stretches.
Tomas sags in the crimson bands holding him. “Fine.” He rattles off an address near South Miami and Caine steps back.
“The bindings will hold you until I am five miles away,” Caine warns him. “Considering it is your fault Onyx is injured, you owe me that much of a head start.”
The heir glowers but doesn’t argue.
Caine grips my hand and we move to the large windows in the study. He looks at me. “Ready, baby?”
My stomach gives a fell swoop. “Always if I’m with you.”
With another grin, he swings me up into his arms and crimson fire sears me.
One second we are inside, the next we are on the side lawn just below the windows. I stare up at his face. “Caine—”
He leans down and captures my mouth. “Hold on, angel. We got a few more of those to go.”
I wrap my arms around his neck and we disappear again.
Chapter 41
Caine
It takes more energy to get us back to a main road than I would like. But I manage to do it by portal jumping only as far as I can see. At the byway, we hail another cab, and I rattle off the address to Helios’ secret lair before collapsing next to Onyx in the backseat.
We are quite the pair. Me short of breath and her limping and trying not to show it.
