“What do you mean?” I ask, stepping from Ruin’s side toward the angel. “Can it kill him?”

Horan shakes his head. “No. But my blood may purify his. It could burn not only the Brightex away, but his very demon nature.”

For a long moment, no one speaks.

I can’t.

I don’t know Caine well enough to make that decision for him, and yet, they are all looking at me like I have to be the one to do it.

The last time I tried to decide someone else’s’ fate, I wound up indebted to Azz.

If I let Horan do this and Caine is no longer a demon, will he even want me?

No. That’s selfish, Onyx. You don’t think that way.

Caine deserves to live. To be free, just like I want to be.

He can’t do that if the Brightex kills him.

Biting my lip, I reach and grip Horan’s hot arm. He is almost as warm as Caine. I look into his face. “Try,” I breathe.

Horan gives my shoulder a squeeze and walks to the bed.

Chapter 44

Caine

Fire.

It burns through me, scorching my veins.

Everything burns.

Onyx? Where are you?

Help me. Someone.

Light blazes out of my peripheral, blinding as my world burns.

God?

Please. Anyone.

Darkness wells but for the burn.

The burn.

Burning …

Chapter 45

Caine

Darkness, cool and soft, blankets me, but I wait for the fire. The heat. I gingerly open my aching eyes.

There is nothing but the dimness, my naked body, and a cool black sheet.

For a moment, I wonder if I am still in the hotel.
