Chapter 11

Caine

As one, the team and I pull the silver pendants from under our shirts. The medallion for a colony enforcer gleams in the lights and the woman’s eyes go so wide I fear they will rupture.

She whips her head between us. In the penthouse lights, she is even more lovely despite the dried blood on her temple. “You’re—”

“Colony enforcers,” Ruin tells her. “Yeah. Now who are you and why are you after the Brightex?”

She blinks and her amber eyes darken to rich bourbon in the glow. “The … Oh.” Color flushes her cheeks. “The cases.”

Ruin peers sidelong at me and I shrug.

Considering her staunch bidding, she should be more than familiar with what the cases held.

“Why are you after the cases?” Ruin amends.

The flush in her pretty skin darkens as she clamps her lips shut.

“Now, pet,” I tell her. “We were doing so well. Communication is key, after all.”

Her eyes flick to me and her pupils blow wide despite the brightness around us. My nostrils flare and the faintest hint of desire pours from her skin. It is mixed with anger, and something else I cannot quite make out, but it is there.

My cock jerks in response.

I step toward her, rolling my hips with every step and her chest heaves under the delectable suit she wears. The one that is like a second skin over her feminine curves.

Leaning down, just out of reach, I assess her in silence. She watches me too, and again, there is that faint trickle of lust. It draws something raw and dark into my gut.

“Why do you want the cases, pet?” I ask, lowering my voice and feeding just a hint of Sin into the timbre.

The scent increases.

Oh, she is responsive.

For a moment, I want to let my hands play over her arms, to caress her through the supple material covering her. To see just how responsive she can be.

Her lips part. “Colony enforcer or not,” she says and the spike in her fragrance all but disappears, “fuck off.”

Ruin and the others chuckle behind me and I flip them off with a flourish as I stand.

Tanner claps me on the shoulder. “Sorry, man. Seems not every woman falls at your feet.”

I eye the female. “She has not yet. Allow me time alone with her. She will.”

Her skin darkens and she glowers.

Ruin shakes his head. “No playing, Caine. Not with her.” He turns back to the female. “I’m a colony enforcer, lady,” he tells her. “And I like my job. But if you don’t start talking, I will make you answer.” His eyes spin to gold and his fangs press into his lower lip.

She pales but remains obstinately quiet.

His sigh is heavy. “Fine. I tried.” He motions and Horan steps closer, naked sword still in hand. “Delve far enough to get what we need and back out.”

Horan smirks, spins his sword in his hand and plunges it down.

The woman cowers, her eyes slamming shut.

Something in me cracks and I step between them, erecting a wall of magick without thinking as I shield the woman with my body.
