Onyx’s ass is the first thing I see, the lush curve, the tightness, as she leans under a tall shelf, her focus fixed on the safe before her.
My lips spread into a hard smile. I don’t speak. But every step coils the lust tighter inside me. She makes a sound of frustration, leans back, takes a deep breath, and bends again.
I smooth my hands over her ass.
She lets out a surprised squeak and whirls. Her eyes fly wide. “Caine?”
My head cocks. “Who were you expecting? Ruin?”
Anger flares in her eyes. “I’m kind of working.” She turns away.
The dismissal is like a punch to my gut.
I grab her and force her back until she hits the wall.
“Let go,” she says coldly.
And oh, how I hate that fucking tone.
“What if I don’t want to?” I ask.
Her amber eyes darken, but the glower never slips. “Let me go, Caine.”
I wedge my knee between her full thighs, pressing into her plump little mound.
She makes a sound low in her throat and tries to pull away. “Let me go.”
Pinning her wrists into the sheetrock, I inhale but her scent is devoid of desire. Ice fills my veins. I release her and she rubs at her wrists. My gut turns. “Onyx—”
“Go away, Caine,” she says, moving back to the safe without another glance my way. “I told you, I’m working.”
I back up.
My spine collides with the door hard enough to bruise. I turn, find the sill, and walk back out into the room.
The desire is gone. So is the rage.
And it their place, something worse waits.
Just that fast, Onyx is done with me. Over it.
Us.
Even knowing Ruin is taken, she seems to prefer him too. Just like Lilah does.
Envy is swift and ugly inside me.
I portal jump back to my station and wait in the shadows.
Onyx will do her part with Ruin and the others as her back-up. We will get the cases, and then she never has to see me again.
Chapter 21
Onyx
I deliver the shoebox back to Ruin and the team with a smirk I don’t feel. Inside, my stomach is hollow. Empty. And it has nothing to do with lack of food and everything to do with the coldness pushing Caine away caused.
Ruin whistles as I near. “I got to say, for a human, you’re damn fast.” He takes the box and passes it to Gage, who nods.
