“Yes, and they did run.Unfortunately, they took their captives with them and killed my men.I still haven’t forgiven you, but I understand your reasoning. But you could have asked why we were going there.I haven’t lied to you yet and I am not about to start. The sooner you see that, the sooner we can stop fighting against each other. My intention was to take my mate, not go to war against her.”

“But what did you expect after everything?”I ask him, and he seems to think for a second.

“I guess I believed the old wives’ tales of mates. That mates are our destiny.I figured you’d feel the same. That…” He pauses and swallows when I remember Kyrio is in the car driving.Dion seems to remember we are not alone, and his gaze moves to Kyrio too.We notice he has put headphones in to tune us out.

Dion sighs with relief, knowing our private conversation is actually private.“You were saying?”I ask him, but his gazeremains on the windshield.“I guess I believed you’d want me when no one else has,” he states.

His words make my stomach twist.“Your mother?”I ask him.He says nothing and I chew my lip.

“Your pack and Anastasia, they want you.I…” he turns his head to look at me and raises an eyebrow at me.“Don’t say you want me when I know otherwise,” he says.

I swallow feeling guilty, but it’s not that I don’t want him.Things have changed now, but I’m unaware of what I want anymore.“Fine, but your pack and Anastasia,” I remind him.

He shakes his head.“No, they respect me, they don’t necessarily want me.I saved them, we became a pack on mutual need of each other.Same as Anastasia; she never loved me, and I never loved her.We just were out of necessity.I was her protection, she was to provide me with an heir,”

“So you didn’t love her at all.”

“I loved the idea of her, the idea of her loving me,” he admits.

“I don’t believe that,” I tell him and he looks at me.

“What, the part of me not loving her?”he questions.

“No the part where you think no one wants you.I see the way your pack idolizes you, talks about you.Yes, you’re their Alpha, their savior, but you’re also more than that to them, you’ve become their family.Maybe you’re not as alone as you think,” I tell him, and he seems confused.

“Perhaps it’s time you remove your rose-colored glasses and see that.”

He snorts.“Using my own words against me.”

“And you’re wrong, I may not feel the bond, but I know what it feels like when you’re not near.I don’t know if that counts as wanting you, but I hate being away from you, too,” I admit. This seems to surprise him.

“You’re right, I don’t know what that falls under, but I’ll take it.It’s better than you being repulsed by being with your parent’s murderer.”he smiles, and I can see the hint of amusement on his face at my words.I chuckle and shake my head, turningmy attention to the window, and I notice we are nearly home. The rain has slowed some, but the weather is miserable.Kyrio drives up the long driveway toward the packhouse and nerves make me feel queasy.

That is until I see his pack on the verge of collapse in the distance, still running laps.“Dion,” I gasp, gripping the door handle. He grips my knee.“They had no issue letting you rot and suffer in the dungeon, they also tried to starve you. They need to be punished,”

“It’s raining!”I exclaim.

“The rain won’t hurt them, or have you forgotten what we are?”he tells me, and I chew my lip.

“But it will make them hate me more,” I tell him as I lean forward and tap Kyrio on the shoulder.“Pull over,” I tell him, and he glances at his Alpha.I glare at Dion, and he grits his teeth.

“Do as she says,” he growls.Kyrio pulls over, and I jump out of the car, racing over to them. They stare at me, but I can tell they’re all on the verge of collapse.“Stop, it’s raining,” I tell them, and Dion comes up behind me.“They can’t until I say so,” he tells me.

“You ordered them!”

He nods before grabbing my arm.

“Come on, let’s go inside,” he tells me, but I shake his arm off.

“No, tell them to stop,” I tell him.

“That defeats the purpose of punishing them.”

I glance at them.

“If you truly see me as your Luna, then you have to respect my voice in this.I say they’ve been punished enough.Release them from your command, Dion.”

Dion stares down at me, the lines of his face hardening under the relentless rain.I step closer, and place my hands on his chest.“There’s a vampire on the loose. What protection do they have out here, weakened and exhausted? They can’t defend themselves or the pack in this state.”
