“It’s been a month since my heat,” Walren pointed out just as breathlessly. “I won’t be breedable again until after this pregnancy is over.”

“Pssh. Let me have my fantasy.”

“Fine.” Walren rolled his eyes, but he was smiling too.

Oh, that smile.

Raptor swooned a little. He brushed Walren’s hair away from his face, raking his gaze over those warm gray eyes.

To think that Walren was here because he had broken into Nood’s Good.

Because he had been trying to escape from baby kidnappers.

That soured Raptor’s mood.

“Chef Master,” Hassel said suddenly, from a few rooms away. His tone was low, warning.

It set Raptor’s alarm bells ringing.

“What?” he asked, turning in his butler’s direction.

“Someone’s poking around the territory. At the north boundary.”

“Can you tell who it is?”

“They’re not saying anything. But the footsteps are heavy.”

Which meant it was very likely an alpha.

Raptor squeezed Walren’s hip. “I gotta go investigate a disturbance, sweetheart.”

Walren had gone pale. “Um. Is it...?”

“Not sure. You’ll stay here where it’s safe.” Raptor brushed a kiss against Walren’s forehead. On any other day, he would have been stuck inside his omega. But because he had been stretching Walren earlier, his knot slipped out with some gentle tugging.

Walren whined and pouted.

“You know I can’t take you out there right now.” Raptor stroked Walren’s cheek. “Be back soon.”

“Stay safe,” Walren said worriedly.

“I’ll do my best.”

Tucking himself into his pants, Raptor joined Hassel in the hallway, jogging with him through the mansion.

“This way,” Hassel said the moment they were out the front door. His frown grew. “Whoever it is, they’re leaving.”

“Damn it!” Raptor strained his ears. There, on the corner furthest from Ace’s property, were the heavy footsteps.

“Should I catch up to them?” Hassel asked.

Raptor shook his head. “Without knowing what powers they have, I don’t want to risk you.”

They reached the corner of the mansion grounds. Through the tall, dense hedge, Raptor could hear the sound of a car driving by. The footsteps were much further away now.

“Give me an assist,” Raptor said.

Because even though he could shift and fly, he wasn’t about to do that in full view of the public. For all that dragons were old and powerful, they were also frequently targeted for their near-impenetrable hides. No one but Raptor’s family and friends knew what species he was.
