In the next breath, he shifted into a large kangaroo, short arms pulling open his pouch.
“Hon, I’ll be back soon. Stay with Mr. Kangaroo for a while, okay?” Walren dropped a kiss on Zebbie’s head and gently slipped him into Hassel’s pouch. He felt so bad for leaving his baby behind, but he didn’t have much of a choice right now.
The footsteps thundered toward the kitchen.
“Shoo,” Hassel said, hopping away. “Zebs will be fine.”
“Thank you,” Walren said gratefully. He flung himself at the back door, fumbling with the knob before stumbling free onto the back porch.
“Walren,” Raptor rumbled, his voice sliding around Walren’s insides andsqueezing.“You’remine.”
Walren ran. He wasn’t as fast as he used to be, his bad leg dragging through the grass.
But after living in a crowded city with his friends, after being kidnapped and locked in a tiny room for weeks, after living in a safe house for even more weeks...
It was so freeing to stretch his legs andrun.
A long time ago, before Walren lost his parents to illness, they used to go out as a family and run free in the grassy plains. Be themselves.
This felt like that. Walren was so tempted to shift so he could run on all four legs, but now wasn’t the time.
Maybe later.
Somethingroared.
When Walren peeked over his shoulder, he saw a large, scaly black dragon on the back porch, leathery wings snapping open.
His thoughts stuttered.
Raptor was in rut. He wanted to chase Walren down to breed him.
But Walren had thought they would do that as humans. The dragon thing would... come later. Had Raptor changed his mind?
Walren panicked a little. He wasn’t ready for Raptor’s dragon shape right now.
The dragon beat his wings, taking off close to the ground.
Walren yelped and ran faster, toward the trees on the far end of the property. How was he going to outrun adragon?
The wing beats grew louder. Then a gust whipped up around him, and he shrieked again.
The sound of flapping wings stopped.
A large weight thumped onto Walren, bowling him down onto the soft grass.
“Ahhh!” Walren thrashed.
“Walren?” a man’s voice said.
Walren paused in his struggling. When he peeked over his shoulder, he found Raptor’s human face staring back at him, concerned.
“Did I scare you? Or did I hurt you?” Raptor began patting Walren all over, checking for injuries.
Walren blinked in confusion. “You’re not a dragon.”
“Were you expecting me to be?” Raptor blinked back at him, just as confused.
“You were chasing me down as a dragon!” Walren cried, his stomach squeezing. “I thought you were gonna fuck me as a dragon for our first time!”
