Walren struggled out of the tangled sheets. He limped quietly out of his room and headed to the double doors at the end of the hallway, hesitantly knocking on Raptor’s door.
He was about to knock again when the sheets inside rustled. “Walry?” Raptor mumbled.
Walren wet his lips nervously. “I can’t sleep.”
“Well, what’re you waiting for? Come on in.”
Walren slipped into the room, feeling naked in his pajamas. Raptor was sitting up in his giant bed, rubbing his face.
The alpha raked his gaze up and down Walren’s body. “What’s wrong?”
Walren winced. “I had a nightmare.”
Raptor was already turning down his covers, making space for Walren in his bed. Walren’s heart fluttered as he crawled in, hesitating next to the alpha.
Raptor’s gaze was soft and patient. “Would you like a hug?”
Walren nodded. He found himself engulfed in a huge hug the next moment, strong arms holding him close.
His breath shuddered out of him. “This feels good.”
“Yeah?” Raptor rubbed his back. “Is there anything else I can do to make it better?”
Walren wet his lips. “My leg hurts.”
“The bad one?”
Walren nodded.
Raptor laid his hand on Walren’s thigh, slowly stroking down to his calf. “Tell me if it’s too much.” Then he rubbed Walren’s leg more firmly, pressing his fingertips into the knotted muscle.
With every pass of his hand, the ache in Walren’s leg faded. He slumped against Raptor’s chest, breathing out. “That feels so good.”
“Good,” Raptor growled.
He nuzzled Walren and held him close, rubbing Walren’s leg until Walren was dozing off on his shoulder.
“Here, I’ll tuck you into bed,” the alpha murmured.
“Mmm.” Walren was barely aware of Raptor laying him down, spooning him from behind, enveloping him in a cocoon of strength.
He didn’t have any more bad dreams that night.
Over the next five days, things fell into a routine.
Walren would wake up in Raptor’s bed. Raptor would cook them all breakfast, including some soft food for Zebbie. Then the alpha would work on Walren’s nest in the front yard, while Walren and Zebbie played in the grass as gazelles.
When it was time to head to Nood’s Good, Walren and Zebbie would tag along with Raptor. Raptor’s staff were back on schedule, so Walren spent most of his time in Raptor’s office, entertaining Zebbie.
On the sixth day, things changed.
Walren was secretly munching on a granola bar during lunch hour, when Raptor stepped into the office.
Walren startled.
Raptor froze in the doorway. Then his gaze dropped to Walren’s hand. “What’re you eating?”
“A... granola bar?”
