“Not sure.” Harley’s eyes narrowed as he looked at the door. “The officer who came to get him told there was someone with new evidence for him.”
“You heard that?”Andrew looked at him, amazed.
“No. My cousin’s daughter is partly deaf, and we all learned sign language and how to read lips to help her,” Harley explained.
“Good skill to have.” Andrew nodded. “Sam always made sure his family was close.”
“Yup!” Harley nodded. “Uncle Sam is all about family.”
Andrew gave a tight smile. “Yes. Family is important.”
Harley refrained from saying the first words to spring to mind about Andrew leaving his first family. Still, it wasn’t Harley’s business, and Andrew was his attorney, so it was best to keep on the man’s good side. He’d researched Andrew before he and Jennifer came to Boston. The man had never lost a case. He was the attorney you wanted on your side in situations Harley had found himself in.
The door opened, and the detective walked back in.
“In light of new evidence brought to us, Mr. Donovan, you are free to go,” the detective told them.
“What new evidence?” Andrew’s eyes narrowed as he stared at the detective.
“I’m sure your daughter will enlighten you as soon as you leave,” the detective told Andrew.
“My daughter?” Andrew’s frown deepened.
“Yes, Miss Jennifer Gains,” the detective told him. “She’s waiting in the reception area for Mr. Donovan.”
“Jennifer’s here?” Harley’s heart thudded as he stood.
The detective nodded, holding the door open. As Andrew stood up, the detective stopped him.
“While Mr. Donovan can leave,” the detective stepped aside as Harley reached the door, “I have a few questions for you, Mr. Gains, about an old case of yours.”
“Excuse me?” Andrew looked at the man in confusion.
“Do you want me to wait for you, Andrew?” Harley looked at him, alarmed.
“You can wait with Miss Gains,” the detective told Harley. “I’m sure she’ll fill you in.”
With that, the detective ushered the confused Harley from the interrogation room and shut the door. Harley stood staring at the door for a few seconds before turning and walking down the hall to the reception. Although it wasn’t an appropriate time, the minute Harley saw Jennifer sitting on a bench waiting for him, his heart skipped a few beats.
“Jennifer,” Harley called, getting her attention.
Her head shot around, and as soon as she saw him, she stood and rushedinto his arms.
“Oh, thank goodness.” Jennifer hugged him.
His arm automatically enclosed her waist and pulled her against him, taking in her scent and warmth. She stepped out of his arms and looked down the corridor.
“Where’s my f… Andrew?” Jennifer looked at Harley questioningly.
“The detective detained him for questioning on an old case,” Harley told her with a shake of his head.
“Shoot, I didn’t think of that,” Jennifer said, snapping her fingers. “We’ll have to wait for him as his driver, James, had to go home for a family emergency. We need to give Andrew a lift home. While we’re there, we can get our clothes.”
“Yes, I believe we were moved from the Langham to the Gains’ Chestnut Hill residence,” Harley commented.
“It may as well be the Langham,” Jennifer told him. “Are you okay?”
“Tired, upset about Clair, and very confused as to what’s going on.” Harley’s brow creased. “The detective said there was new evidence. Did you bring in new evidence?”
