Yeah I definitely hadn’t thought this part through.
Chapter twenty-seven
DECLAN
I’m perfectly fine with going on a little vacation, even if it’s just to circumvent all of this mess. Logan and Sebastian will figure out how to get it approved, while I take a step to trip Kurt up. There is no fucking way I am going to let that bastard keep messing with us and our futures for some vendetta that shouldn’t exist. At least, in the last hour, that’s what I found.
Between finding out who his real parents are and hearing the bullshit story he laid out for Noah from the other two, I am livid.
Kurt used to be an honorable son of a bitch, something that’s clearly revealing itself to be false. He was never honorable but he was a great actor. Add on the fact that he gave Heath access to Noah, the only reason our precious Bunny was ever married to the guy, and Kurt is going to die.
Hopefully, by my hands but I’ll take any painful, excruciating option at this point. Maybe I’ll find several ways, study the art of necromancy, and play with him a bit.
“Will you quit growling?” Jane demands as she slaps the back of my head.
Rushing off to a little hole-in-the-wall burger joint after calling my first squad brought them around immediately. I texted a code red and thirty minutes later, two of the five were sitting around me. The other three are currently deployed god knows where on secret missions way above my pay grade.
Garth snorts as I snarl at her, too pent-up on rage to control my emotions. “Girl, you know when he calls code red that he’ll be feral. Declan’s always that way,” he says. He sips his beer and grimaces. Garth hates alcohol but he likes to fit in. “Now, you ask us to take this information and run with it, right?”
A wild grin splits across my lips at my fantastically horrid idea. Garth and Jane aren’t just soldiers. They were also our squad’s recorders—still are. They have access to channels of communication in order to spread the word when they are told. It’s how the public knows about our clinic and our deployments and firsthand tellings of things that happen overseas.
They are basically given the green light on what to report over time, gaining the trust of several of our superiors so that picking and choosing stories becomes part of their pastime. This story though, might put them in the wrong light and essentially get them fired. Or worse.
What I am asking them to do…
“I’m in!” Jane says before downing her beer and then starting on Garth’s. He grins just as wide as I do, making me remember that they are just as crazy as I am.
“We need a little excitement and all this shit you brought us has to only be the tip of the iceberg. Besides, we have a few other sources, and Kurt… is a piece of shit!” she says.
I lean across the table, my expression hardening. “Can you tell me why Kurt is doing all this? A vendetta to avenge his parents seems like a bullshit reason.”
Garth chews on his lip, looking over at Jane. She swallows, gulping down the rest of his beer before speaking. “It’s bad.”
“I gather that, Jane. Just tell me because Logan is pretty sure this shit has been going on since he was a fucking teenager. The one newspaper article we found on this shit mentioned that their son could be involved. I brushed it off before but now I’m not so sure.”
“Sometimes people are just evil,” she muses, throwing me a shrug but I can tell that there’s more she’s not giving me.
“Not fucking good enough.”
Jane sighs. “And yet, Kurt is evil to the bone. His desire to fuck with the system stems from jealousy in a home he was thrown into.”
“How the fuck do you know that? Noah didn’t even know that shit until Kurt told him.”
Jane leans back in her chair, her eyes unfocusing as she stares past us. “Because Noah isn’t the first person he told. Heath, his partner, squeals real nice when you apply the right pressure. Sure, we can’t use his name in any of our articles, that was the deal, but Kurt’s vendetta has very little to do with his parents and everything to do with Noah.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” I growl out and then clear my throat. My anger isn’t with them.
“I wish I was. That little stripe of greed though, once Kurt got a hold of the system, just expanded.”
I hate every single fucking word that just came out of Jane’s mouth but in some twisted, convoluted way, I know that it’s true. I know that Kurt is the type of bastard who starts something and then expands because it is fun. He was always a little out of control and power is a seductive bitch.
It also means that Kurt hurt a lot of fucking people for fun.
And he is going to pay for every sliver of pain he dealt, starting with what he put Noah through.
I thank them both, leaving enough money on the table to pay for another round before heading to the car. Once in the safety of the vehicle, I dial Sebastian. “How is he?”
“He’s better; we’re out of the hospital,” he says.
