The door finally gave way, and she heard the sound of menrushing in as Lucy disappeared with Kala.
She recognized that man. Zach’s father stood in the livingroom. His mask was off, his predator unleashed. Two men showed up behind him, both with guns in hand.
Devi stood there, trying to give her cousin a chance. “Ialready called the police.”
Ray White’s lips curled up in a smirk. “They have betterthings to do. Trust me. When my boss decides to distract, he does it well. They’re all down at the train station trying to find the terrorists. And hemade sure there’s an Interpol team there so everyone is trying to save theirfucking brothers. Gotta love cops,” he said with a chuckle. He glanced around, his eyes stopping on Kala’s backpack near Devi’s feet. “So where is KalaTaggart?”
Devi shrugged. “She went out for breakfast.”
“She got shot. Tell me they didn’t kill her.” Ray walked in,acting like this was a normal visit between friends. “They were specificallytold to not kill Miss Magenta. The boss likes her. I think he’s got a littlecrush.” He nodded to the others, and one of them took off the way Lucy hadgone.
Please let her be in the safe room. Please. Please lether sacrifice mean something.“What do you want with me?”
He looked her up and down, the way a man does before hemakes his move. It was gross. “Well, honey, I think I want to find out why myson is willing to risk the world for you. Right before the bombs startedexploding, my boss might have implied to Zach that I was at the station andafter his mom. So that probably threw him off and he won’t see the real menready to take her into custody. She’s got a soft spot when it comes to Zach.”
“He’s her son.” Her heart was pounding in her chest. Panicthreatened, but she remembered all the training her mom had given her. Herparents hadn’t let her go off into the world without learning someself-defense. The biggest part was to not panic.
“Yeah, that’s been helpful over the years. Ishouldaknocked her up more,” Ray said. “I think when sheknows how our son feels about you, she’ll do what we need. Of course if wecatch Zach, then it’ll just be fun to watch him squirm. Thinks he’s better thanhis father. I’ll show him.”
The sound of gunfire blasted through the townhouse, and Devitook the chance. Lucy was fighting and she was smart. If she only had to dealwith one…
Devi took off for the back rooms. The doors were heavy andthey locked. She slammed the bedroom door closed and locked it, reaching forthe only chair in the room and propping it against the door. Immediately itstarted shaking.
Devi ignored it and grabbed a towel, wrapping it around herhand and climbing on the bed. Thank the universe she had some of her father’sheight. She pulled the thin lamp, turning it over and using the heavy base tobreak the window.
She was halfway out when she felt hands around her ankles, pulling her back.
She hit the bed as her hands were gripped behind her.
“Don’t you dare kill her,” Ray was saying. “She’s all we gotsince that bitch killed Greg and locked herself in. We have to go. Now. Knockher out, but don’t you fucking kill her.”
Devi kicked and fought, but when the man brought the hilt ofhis gun down on her head, she slid into darkness.
ChapterSixteen
She was gone.
They were both gone, but Devi…his Devi was in the hands of afucking madman, and he hadn’t been here to protect her.
Zach stood in the living room surrounded by his team, but hehad never felt more alone.
Because this was his fault. He had brought her with him forselfish reasons.
“I have a private aircraft leaving twenty minutes after theattack.” Lou was on her laptop. “I believe they’re going to Nepal, which vibeswith the intel the Canadians gave us. Are you sure we shouldn’t be at thehospital?”
The question was directed at Kala. Who probably should be atthe hospital.
When they’d returned to base, they’d found it eerily quiet. The door had been kicked in, and for a moment he thought Devi had made it tothe safe room. Big Tag knew the room was in use, and they all believed theirpeople were in there.
“I’m fine. Lucifer’s pretty good at stitching people up,”Kala replied, her eyes on her own laptop.
Then the door had opened and only Kala and Lucy hademerged.
“It wasn’t as bad as I thought at first.” Lucy stood besideTristan, who was also working the web to find information. “There was so muchblood I thought the bullet was lodged in her, but it was more like a heavygrazing of her left side. I think they had orders to not kill her. I know thedude I shot was pissed he couldn’t get his hands on her.”
“Which is precisely why you should have left me and takenDevi into the safe room,” Kala said through gritted teeth.
Lucy’s eyes narrowed. “We had a sniper situation. I couldn’tget her across the living room without exposing her to gunfire, and shebasically begged me to save your lousy ass. Which I am regretting right now.”
