“I’ll shut up.”

Drawing in a deep breath, she uncrossed her legs. “I want to know how to unroll a condom on a cock erotically.”

Bunny bit her lip, on the verge of cracking up, judging by her twinkling eyes. Her eyes watered. A giggle burst from her, but she pressed down on her lips harder and fanned her eyes. “Youmight be better off allowing Outlaw to do it. You wouldn’t want your nails to tear it,” she said, when she controlled herself.

The entire situation was so absurd, Meggie roared with laughter and Bunny joined in.

“I can’t believe at my big age I don’t know how to put a condom on my husband’s penis,” she said, laughing harder.

“I can. You two have enough children to fill the Old Woman’s Shoe and Mother Goose’s house.”

Meggie swatted her playfully.

“Okay, babe, okay.” Bunny straightened and drew in a hand in front of herself. “Recentered,” she promised. “Tell me why you need condoms.”

“Jordan can’t see me until next week. We’ve had unprotected sex once. Until I get a prescription, we need birth control. He might not pull out in time, so I’m not comfortable with the rhythm method.”

“How soon do you need to learn to sexily unroll a condom on a dick?”

“By tomorrow night after the birthday party.”

“I’ll find what’s best to practice on and call you later. The lesson shouldn’t take too long, so I figure I can drop in this evening or sometime tomorrow. While food is being prepared and decorations put into place, we can sneak away.”

Meggie nodded. “I wish last year’s big celebration and dance routine was this year. On the other hand, we probably wouldn’t have pulled it off given the circumstances, so the low-key affair is a good thing.”

“It is,” Bunny said, standing. She returned the chair to Ophelia’s desk. “Let me get back to Cove and Gunner. Rebel promised she’d keep an eye on them.” She hugged Meggie. “Hang in there, babe.”

“I will.”

Alone again, the silence grew overwhelming again. The excitement usually surrounding all the celebrations left a dull ache inside her. Halloween passed without incident. Mostly. Rebel had been on a different warpath then.

No! She had tostop. She’d force herself to push all the negativity out of her mind. Even if she managed it until after Christopher’s birthday party and her seduction, she would consider it a victory.

Pursing her lips, Meggie stared at her cell phone. It sat on her desk in front of her.

The memory of hearing Brett proposition her daughter rose in her head. He deserved to die. Maybe, he was already dead. Who knew? She’d tried to save his life, but then he’d targeted Rebel.

Predators and abusers didn’t change, so good riddance.

Sighing, Meggie opened the desk drawer and took out the number Kendall scribbled on a piece of paper. Before she changed her mind, she punched in the numbers and pressed the call button.

“Hey!”

“This isn’t Christopher, Torie.” Their telephone numbers differed by two digits. “It’s Meggie.”

“Uh, oh?” The question rang in her voice. “If I would’ve saved him in my contacts, I would have known.”

“And not answered,” Meggie said evenly.

“I don’t answer numbers I don’t recognize. What can I do for you?”

“I’m calling to discuss the amount of money Christopher gave to you.”

“It was his money. And the bank manager called him just today for approval.” Smugness dropped into her tone. “The money is now in my account.”

Johnnie had so much to atone for. His undermining of Meggie’s confidence pushed her to the brink of insanity. It made her question everything about herself, from her marriage to her mothering.

“You didn’t get the entire amount, Torie,” Meggie said quietly. “I know because I gave the instructions.”
