“Of course, it was you,” she said bitterly. “He wouldn’t have deprived my son and me!”
“I understand you have feelings for Christopher.” Even if he hadn’t noticed, Meggie saw how the nurse’s eyes softened the moment Christopher arrived. He had that effect on women. Most of them lusted after him. Kiera had been in love with him though, and she thought Torie was, too. “He’s a good man, so I get it.”
“Do you? I seriously doubt that you do. I had a husband who couldn’t keep his dick out of no one. Men. Women. Dogs. Cats. Spiders. It didn’t matter.”
Meggie frowned. “I didn’t call to discuss your husband. I called to apologize to you over Rebel’s behavior and to remind you that although she attacked you first, she is still a minor. You shouldn’t have hit her.”
“She got me fired!”
“The surveillance cameras got you terminated. She’s written you an apology—”
“I don’t want it. She’s as much of a spoiled bitch asyou, madam. Coming off your perch and lowering yourself to call me.”
Meggie drew in a deep breath, to temper her rising anger. She’d been called much worse in her life, but calling Rebel a bitch? The whole situation was blown out of control because she was stupid enough to let Johnnie get to her. “The reason for my call is because of your son—”
“Fuck you, lady. My son isn’t your business.”
“Neither is my daughter,” Meggie snapped. “Especially when you lied on her to get her daddy, my husband, in that cafeteria. We weren’t there for fun and games, Torie. We were there because Jo was undergoing a very serious surgery, and you led him to believe you’d call the cops on Rebel.”
“I should have!”
“Then you both would’ve gone to jail.”
“Hewouldn’t have let you press charges on me.”
“Myhusband would’ve done anything I wanted him to do. Why do you thinkIapproved the money you received?”
“You’re a fucking dirty bitch.”
“And you’re a desperate one. In the scheme of things, who wins? I’d say me. I have the man and the money. What do you have but the crumbsI’mallowing?”
“I’m going to call him—”
“If you do, any other money will be declined. What you receive today, will be the only payment you get.”
“You won’t know.”
“I have access to his phone. I hadn’t looked at it because I’d been sick.”
“Fine, you win, you fucking bitch. But the joke’s on you. You’ll always wonder if he’s hiding something from you. You’ll never fully trust him ever again. By the way, only your daughter and that Kendall bitch sided with you. Your sons, your husband, the club members, all knew about the contract, and the money, so fuck you. Live in doubt for the rest of your fucking life.”
The line went dead, leaving Meggie too stunned to move. Finally, her shock receded. She picked up her phone to dial the bank manager, intending to tell him not to release any more funds to Torie.
“Aunt Meggie?”
At Rory’s call, she jumped. Wiping away her tears, she turned and stood just as her nephew walked into her office.
Upon seeing Aunt Meggie’s wet cheeks, Rory closed her office door and remained in place. She was already upset about something, so maybe, his coming here to throw himself on her mercy wasn’t the best idea. But he’d always remember Bash’s unholy screaming and the terror he felt at the thought of watching his father die. He still didn’t understand why Dad jumped to Bash’s summons, as if he were a Scorpion instead of a Dweller.
He'd even killed two of his own brothers at Bash’s orders.
“Are you…are you…okay?”
Grabbing Kleenex from the box on her desk, she nodded. She took a couple of minutes to compose herself, not giving Rory any indication of what he should do. Mom expected him to take over.He hoped that wouldn’t be the case with Aunt Meggie. She was always the one who gave comfort.
Once she controlled her tears, she walked to her mini refrigerator and took out bottled waters for them, then nodded to the couch in the middle of the room. After sitting and tasting their water, she smiled at him.
“What can I do for you? If you’re here for CJ he’s in his room.”
