“She got home safely,” Kendall announced, relieved. “Go face the fucking executioner with balls in hand, asshole.”
He smiled. “Thank you.”
“Whatever.” She hung up, still pissed with him.
When he turned, he saw Megan whispering to Rebel in front of her bedroom door. Once their girl went into her room, his wife looked at him a moment.
“I’m sleeping in my office,” she said.
“Megan—”
He stepped toward her. She stepped back, so he stopped. He didn’t want her to leave the house again.
“You can sleep on the sofa in the room,” he said. “Ican.”
“You’ll just end up in bed next to me. If I had told you to sleep somewhere else, you wouldn’t have left.”
“Kendall called me.”
“She said she would when she was leaving Roxy to go order Johnnie out of the house.”
“She gave me advice.”
Megan shrugged. “She gives good advice.”
“Don’t hate me, Megan.Please.”
“I don’t.”
“You feel some fuckin’ way about my ass. It ain’t love.”
“It isn’t hate.”
“Is it anyfuckinthing?”
She narrowed her eyes. “What do you think it should be?”
He didn’t want to answer that.
“How wouldyoufeel in a similar situation?”
“Motherfucker would be dead,” he snarled.
“Of course,” she said sarcastically. “Because I’m untouchable, while you get to do what you please with who you please. You’re shareable.”
He stiffened. “I ain’t respondin’ to that bullshit. You’ve lost your fuckin’ mind.”
“I am in full control of my senses. What I can’t help but think about is Kiera.”
“What? I know you fuckin’ lyin’. Ki’s been dead almost eighteen fuckin’ years.”
“Ki.” She spat the name, tears pooling in her eyes. “Kierawas your sounding board before I was awarded the position. I’ve been unavailable so you found someone else.”
A sob escaped her, and she covered her face with her hands.
Desperation sank into Christopher. Torie was bad enough. She was a present issue. ButKiera?
He took a step toward her. She dropped her hands and staggered back. His heavy footfalls gave him away.
