This time, Christopher really wanted to kill him.

This time, Meggie didn’t care.

But she’d promised Rory she’d find a way to save Johnnie. She also didn’t want Kendall to die. She and Kendall were sisters-in-law and friends. Kendall shouldn’t have had to pay for Johnnie’s stupidity.

Yet, Christopher would’ve killed her to protect Meggie. He would’ve taken Rory, Mattie, JJ, and Blade’s mother away.

For her.

She realized that, not only didn’t she want Kendall to die, but Johnnie either. She wanted him to leave her alone.

He was her brother-in-law. Once, she’d cared for Johnnie more than she should have. It fostered Christopher and Johnnie’s animosity, although the idiot had a wife.

Neither here nor there.

In this, Kendall was a non-entity. The dangers to her sons couldn’t factor in. She was the reason they even thought to follow in Christopher’s footsteps. She’d dressed her boys like their daddy, didn’t bat an eye when they went for a spin with Christopher, stepped out of the way when it came time for their gun lessons and knife throwing, kept her mouth shut if they saw more than they should have at the club, only wanted equal rights for Rebel over cigarettes and alcohol.

In her head, she’d glamorized the club because she idolized her husband.

So, when Bunny left, she texted him words she always found easiest to open the lines of communication.

He didn’t answer her. Five minutes after she messaged him, he walked in. He paused at seeing her in bed, the covers around her waist, her breasts bare.

Hands in his pockets, he continued to her, then halted next to her nightstand. “I-I gotta kidnap you, baby?”

She frowned. “What?”

“If you plannin’ on leavin’ me, I’ma steal you for a month to try and change you mind. If…if I can’t, I’ma letcha go.”

Her eyes rounded. He was dead serious.

His gaze fell to her chest. He sat next to her. “If you gotta leave me to be happy, I’ma let you go. But I gotta at least try to change your mind, Megan.”

“You’re such a psycho, Christopher.”

He didn’t respond.

Smiling tenderly, she opened her arms. His big body sagged with relief, then he laid his head against her belly, planting a soft kiss there.

“You know I ain’t even killin’ our sons,” he said quietly. “My words got ahead of me. I wasn’t thinkin’.”

She kissed the top of his head, then laid her cheek against his silky hair. “I know, but just to be safe they are on the no-kill list.”

He sighed, his warm breathing brushing over her skin.

“I’m so sorry you didn’t have the fiftieth birthday celebration you deserved.”

“As long as you happy, I’m happy, Megan. Bein’ with you in your arms, the best fuckin’ birthday present I can have.”

“I love you. The past few days have been wicked.”

He lifted his head and smirked at her. “You been a wicked little bitch.” He kissed her. “I wasn’t happy when it was goin’ on, but it just make me love you more.”

“Does it?” she murmured, licking his lips. “That’s good to know. I have no intention of apologizing.”

He laughed. “Didn’t think you would. Anyfuckintime, you didn’t give a good motherfuck if I fucked up Johnnie, I ain’t expectin’ an apology.”

“I don’t want Johnnie dead.”
