I slammed my fist into the shower tile, and the bathroom’s walls shook.

“What was that?”came the girl’s voice from the bedroom. “Are you okay in there?”

I turned the water off, toweled off, and headed back to the bedroom.

Her face lit up when she saw me. I’d met her a few hours ago on the beach. She was partying with her friends.

“That wasamazing, Jack. But why’d you clean up so fast?” she asked as she climbed on all fours. “Don’t you know I’m gonna get you dirty all over again?”

“Where’d you say you’re from?” I asked, sitting on the edge of the bed.

“Ottawa,” she said. She bit her bottom lip, trying to look sexy.“Now, do youreallywanna hear all about how boring Ottawa is?” She wiggled her perfect ass at me, trying to lure me back with the thing she’d already given me. “Or would you rather fuck me again?”

I stood and stepped into a fresh pair of boxer briefs. “You said you have a boyfriend back home, right?”

The unpleasant reminder wiped the sultry look right off her face.

“Yeah,” she admitted, a bit suspiciously. “Are you worried about it or something? He’s not going to find out.”

“Nah.” I pulled out my cell phone, made a few taps on the screen, then tossed it aside. “But you should get dressed. Your Uber is on its way. Be here in five minutes.”

She laughed. Until she realized I wasn’t joking. “Wait. Are you for real? You seriously just called me a car?”

I stared at her and gave a small nod. I didn’t have anything more to say.

“Wow,” she huffed, covering her breasts with her arm. “That’s how it is, huh? You didn’t have a problem with that fact when you met me, but you’re gonna act all moral now?Afteryou fucked me?”

I didn’t say a word.

“You’re arealfucking asshole, Jack. You know that?”

“Never said I wasn’t.”

I left the room to give her some privacy while she dressed.

A minute later, she stormed through my house, clutching the rest of her belongings beneath her arm. “Bye, fuckhead.”

She slammed the front door. She was gone.

Fine with me.

I know they’re all the same. Time and again, all they do is prove me right.

After what I’ve been through? They can have my body … but they’ll never have my heart.

Never again.

Chapter 3

Emma

Two months later.

I clocked out and left work with a smile on my face, ready for the best part of the day—the short but scenic walk home. Outside, I took a purifying breath of Bayfield’s fresh, silky air. The late afternoon sun shimmered over the clear blue lake, just visible in the distance over the lush late spring greenery.

Home.

This was my home now.
