Reavo’s jaw dropped with shock, and his grip on my shirt weakened. “Wait—Soupy was having an affair withMegan?” His brow grew heavy with disappointment. “No. No, Hath, you got that wrong. No way. Soupy wouldn’t do that to us.”
“Hediddo that,” I muttered. I knocked Reavo’s hand off of me. “AndDaneover here knew about it all along.”
“I didn’t fuckin’ know,” Dane said. “Stop saying that because you’re starting to piss me off. If I’d known, I would’ve told you—right after I knocked Soupy the fuck out. Kinda like I wanna knockyouthe fuck out for leaving us.”
My eyes narrowed. “So you’re saying you found out after he died?”
“Yeah, Hath, that’s exactly what I’m sayin’. I only found out a few months ago.”
“Bullshit. I don’t believe you.”
“Whatever, man.” Dane rolled his eyes. “I’d explain it to you, but since you’ve missed out ontwo yearsof shop talk, you’re kinda out of the loop, you know?”
“Just fuckin’ tell me, Dane,” I said. The fight had left me, and I took a seat at the center island. The boys sat across from me.
“The owner told me, alright? After a big fuckin’ ordeal where the team almost traded me because I was asking too many questions about you and Soupy, and everyone in the front office was trying to cover up the affair, and now I’m dating this hot journalist chick named Austen, who was a part of the plot to destroy me—”
I cut him off, clutching my temples between my hands. “Wait, what? What the hell are you talking about, Dane?”
Frustrated, he huffed. “Just trust me when I say it’s a long ass story, and I could probably write an entire book about the ordeal, okay? The point is, I’ve only known about Megan and Soupy’s affair for a few months. That’s when I got the PI to track you down, and that brings us up to now.”
I grumbled. I was starting to believe him.
Reavo scratched his head. “How come I didn’t know about any of this?”
“Because it’s not my story to tell,” Dane told him. “It’s Hath’s story. And if he wants to tell us, he can.”
“So that’s why you came out here,” I muttered.
“Whether or not you wanna come back to play hockey is up to you. But we need closure, Hath,” Dane said, shaking his head. “We were left wondering what the hell happened to you. Soupy died one day, and then a few days later, you left us. I mean, what the hell?”
“Fine.” I sighed. “What do you wanna know.”
“When did you find out about the affair?” Dane asked. “And what happened the night he died?”
I reached for that beer. “I’m gonna need this.”
Chapter 26
Emma
“Surprised to see me?” Trevor asked. He stood from the table and spread his arms out, as if he expected me to greet him with a hug. “No hug? Fine. Still a fuckin’ bitch, huh.”
My first instinct was to run. Run upstairs, grab Mackenzie, and dash out the door, screaming for help at the top of my lungs to anyone who might hear. But I knew I wouldn’t make it. Trevor was a sloppy drunk, but he was big and strong and ruthless. If I ran upstairs to grab Mackenzie, all he had to do was wait at the bottom of the stairs for me. I’d never make it past him. I had to buy time and think ofsomething, some way to outsmart him …
God, how I wished Jack was here with me right now.
“Trevor,” I said, trying to remain calm despite my racing pulse and the sickening churn in my gut. “What are you doing here?”
“Youstilldon’t know what an intelligence specialistdoes in the Army, do you?” He scoffed. “I’m trained in recon, Emma. If you were trying to hide from me, going to your cousin’shouse was probably the worst place you could go. Hell, this is thefirstplace I looked for you. Part of me wondered if youwantedme to find you.” He walked over to Nicole and shook her by the chin. “Good ol’ Nicky. Oh, how I missed her. First thing I did when I got here was tape her mouth shut. God, lemme tell ya, I’ve been waiting so long to do that …”
She stared back at Trevor with a searing hatred in her eyes.
“I bet right now, in that pretty little head of yours, you’re thinking you were right about me all along, aren’t ya?” he teased Nicole. “But see, what you don’t realize is thatyoucaused all this to happen with the shitty way you treated me. That’s right. If you never convinced Emma that I was ‘toxic,’ we wouldn’t be in this situation right now, would we?”
“Leave her alone, Trevor,” I said.
“Why should I?”
