His nostrils flared. “You didwhat?”

“I—I had no idea he was a murderer, I swear! I’d never putourdaughter in danger if I’d known what kind of man he was …”

“Jesus.” He palmed his forehead. “Call him. Right now. Tell him to bring Mackenzie over here anddo nottry anything funny, or you’ll regret it.”

“Why don’t we just go over to his place to get her instead?” I stammered.

Trevor shook his head. “No. I’m not leaving this house until I get my daughter. Make him bring her over here.”

“Okay,” I said. “But my phone’s not on me. It’s in the other room. I’ll go get it.”

I began plotting my escape—sprint through the front door, scream for help, run to the neighbor’s house, try to make as much of a scene as I possibly could …

Trevor shook his head. “No way. You stay right here. You can use my phone.”

He slid his phone across the table to me. I stared at it.

Fuck.

I couldn’t call Jack if I wanted to—I didn’t have his number memorized.

“I don’t know his number off the top of my head,” I quietly admitted.

“Fine.” He grunted. “Let’s go get your phone together.”

But my phone was upstairs—where Mackenzie was sleeping. I couldn’t lead him there. There was nowhere to go. I was trapped.

“C’mon,” Trevor grumbled, grabbing me by the arms and hoisting me out of my chair.

My eye caught the manila folder.

“Wait!” I gasped, scrambling to reach the cell phone records. “Wouldn’t his phone number be in here?”

Trevor smirked. “You’re right. Good thinking.” He let me go, and I sank back into my chair with a sigh of relief.

“Call him,” he commanded. “On speaker phone. And don’t even try anything funny ‘cause I’ll know.”

I took my time dialing Jack’s number.

“Jesus, hurry the hell up,” Trevor moaned.

“I’m going as fast as I can,” I lied.

My heart raced. Would Jack know something was wrong? Surely he’d hear it in my voice. He’d obviously know something was wrong when I asked him to bring Mackenzie back to me—but would he be quick-witted enough not to say that out loud?

“Give me that already,” Trevor said, swearing under his breath. He grabbed the phone from me and finished dialing the number, then slammed it back down on the table.

On speaker, we heard the phone ring.

Once … twice …

Jeff and Nicole both began to squirm against their restraints and loudly shout, their voices muffled, their eyes wild.

Then Trevor and I noticed what they were making a commotion about: the small figure that stood in the doorway.

Mackenzie silently stared at the four of us, her eyes huge.

“Nooooo,” I wailed, and tears immediately spilled from my eyes.
