He mounted me, his whiskey breath hot on my neck.

“I’m gonna ruin you,” he whispered, his hands fumbling with his belt buckle. “Where’s your boyfriend now?”

Jack,I thought, crushed with sadness, thinking of how differently things could’ve been …

And just like that, Jack appeared out of thin air, looming behind Trevor.

I knew I was safe now.

Jack laid his hand, big and strong, on Trevor’s shoulder.

“Huh?” Trevor mumbled, his chin disappearing as he turned to eye the strange hand on his shoulder.

It all happened so fast—in one motion, Jack pulled at Trevor’s shoulder, spinning him around. But before Trevor could even fully turn to face him, Jack’s other fist hooked through the air and powered through Trevor’s chin. His lower jaw came unhinged and grossly contorted, spit flying from his mouth. He flew off his feet and backward through the air. His lifeless body went down with a crash, the back of his head smacking the hard kitchen floor.

Jack pounced, dropping a knee into Trevor’s sternum to keep him from getting up. He grabbed Trevor’s shirt collar and pulled his head off the ground, his fist clenched and cocked and ready to swing again. But once he saw Trevor was out cold, he dropped him to the floor.

“What the fuck!” Jack yelled as he hurried over to me. “What did he do to you guys?” he asked as he peeled the duct tape from my face as painlessly as he could. “Are you okay?”

“Jack,” I cried. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

He grabbed a steak knife and sawed through the nylon ropes, freeing my hands.

“Where’s Mackenzie?” I asked, tears still sliding down my cheeks.

“She’s safe. Dane and Reavo are watching her in my car.”

He rushed over to Nicole and freed her first, then Jeff.

“God damn.” Jack winced as he saw Jeff’s tender face. “You’re gonna need a few stitches, man.”

We heard police sirens in the distance, growing louder.

“The police are here. C’mon, let’s get you out of here.”

Chapter 30

Jack

I led Emma and her housemates outside. Mom and daughter were reunited just as the police pulled up, red and blue lights flashing. I grabbed the first officer on scene and quickly explained the situation, leading him inside the house.

The officer drew his gun and we entered the house.

We found Trevor still lying on the kitchen floor, eyes open, tongue hanging out. I hit him so goddamn hard, I almost worried I’d killed him when his head smacked the floor, andI’dbe the one spending the night in jail. Besides, an ending like that would almost betoogood for that asshole. I wanted him to suffer in prison for alongtime.

But the officer managed to rouse him from his slumber and immediately turned him onto his stomach to cuff him. “You’re under arrest.”

“Huh?Arrest?” he moaned. “What for? And where the hell am I?”

The moron had no idea where he was or what he’d done.

I followed the police officer as he escorted Trevor outside. I put my arm around Emma and we watched as Trevor was placed into the back of a police cruiser.

Another officer came up to us. “So what happened here tonight?”

With Mackenzie on her hip, Emma blew out a sigh.

I put out my arms. “I’ll take Mackenzie.”
