“Sorry! But if you start getting freaky with a pro hockey player while you’re literally parked right outside the store, I’mgonnawatch!” We both laughed. “Anyway, look, if you like this guy, you gotta strike while the iron’s hot. Why don’t you ask him what he’s doing tomorrow night?”
“I already know he can’t do anything tomorrow.”
“Why not?”
“Because his team is leaving on a road trip tonight. He’ll be gone for a week.”
“Oh no, no, no.” Raven tutted and shook her head. “Do you have any idea how many girls all over the country are sliding into his DMs right this very moment?”
I frowned. “Hmph .. I’d prefer to think he’s not like that …”
“Honey, we both knowallmen are like that if given the opportunity. And pro athletes haveallthe opportunities in the world.”
“So what are you suggesting? That I sleep with him to get my foot in the door before he goes and fucks a bunch of jersey chasers all over the country?” I turned my nose up. “Because if so, ew. No thank you. No longer interested.”
“No. All I’m saying is you need more time with this guy, because you want him thinking aboutyouwhen he’s on the road, not the jersey chasers.”
“Okay, sure. But he’s leaving tonight.”
“He’s coming back with those soundproofing panels, isn’t he?”
“Maybe …”
“Well, if he does, you should run over there and offer to help him.”
“Ooh, and isthatwhen I should sleep with him?” I teased.
“Hey, if you want. I wouldn’t blame you.” She laughed. “But on second thought—if the goal is to keep him thinking about you while he’s on the road—you know what would be even better than sleeping with him?”
“What’s that?”
“If you teased him and got himallworked up, maybe gave him a little taste, but stopped just shy of sleeping with him.”
“Ooh … that is delightfully cruel, Raven.” I grinned deviously. “That gives me an idea, too.”
I told her what I had in mind.
“Perfect,” she purred. “I absolutely love it.”
“Yeah, I think he’ll like it, too. He’s kinda corny like that, you know?”
She gave me a sassy smile. “You’rebothkinda corny.”
I tutted. “Maybe, but he’s far more corny than I am.”
“Uh-huh. Keep telling yourself that,” she said as we both got back to work.

It was like a wild goose chase to actually find the stuff, but after hours of hunting, the back of my G Wagon was jam-packed with giant rolls of soundproofing foam. I hurried back to BarDown, a close eye on the clock.
It was almost seven. And Ineededto get this done before our team flight to St. Louis at eleven o’clock. Because for the first time in a long time, I met a girl I actually liked. McKayla wasn’t like the other girls I’d been seeing ever since I made it to the pros. She didn’t worship the ground I walked on just because I was somebody “famous”—no, she didn’t care that I played hockey. She wanted me to do the right thing and be a better person.
I didn’t know it until I met McKayla, but that was the kind of girl I’d been waiting for. And now that I’d met her, I didn’t want to let her down.
I pulled up outside of BarDown. The windows were dark, the work crew having called it a day. I didn’t mind. Yeah, it meant I had to put the soundproofing up myself, but at least I didn’t have to deal with those clowns.
