“Is Cain coming this weekend?”
Mal winced. “He won’t be coming back until the trial is over. The villains have people following him, and he doesn’t want to lead them to Roe.”
“Go see him.” Van patted his back. “We’ll take care of Betty and Truffle. Go see him this weekend. You both need it.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.” She eyed him. “Do you know who Bianca thinks the best father in the entire world is?”
“Marco or Bennett Wilson?”
She shook her head. “You. She thinks you are the absolute best. Who do think she will want to adopt the baby?”
His eyes widened and he pointed at himself. “Me?”
“Just be prepared if she asks. Talk to Cain.”
Mal grabbed his phone. “I’ll book a flight now.”
Chapter 10
Cain shuffled the papers in front of him, looking for the forms he needed. Working from home wasn’t ideal, but they wouldn’t let him back in the office after he’d worked ten days in a row. Now, he was forced to lounge on his couch as he reviewed Roe’s case for the umpteenth time. If Mal was here, he would have snacks and delicious tea made with fresh foraged herbs.
The house was suddenly echoingly empty. If Mal was there, music would fill the kitchen as the omega gracefully dodged Betty to move from the stove to the cabinets. Maybe he would still be working on the couch, but Truffle would be sprawled on his lap, purring loudly.
A buzz sounded loudly, signaling someone at the downstairs.
Cain frowned, then went to the door and spoke into the speaker. “Benson residence.”
“Hey,” a sing song voice came through.
A grin slowly spread across his face. “Mal?”
“Yep.”
He quickly unlocked the door. “Third floor, apartment B.”
A few moments later and Mal was in his arms, head resting on top of Cain’s. It was the first time he had dated someonetaller than him, but he liked it. His lanky frame was perfect. Completely and utterly perfect.
“I’m going to be a daddy,” Mal said.
Cain’s eyes widened and he leaned back. “Betty is too young to have babies. Did Truffle knock some cat up? I thought he was neutered.”
“Bianca is pregnant,” Mal blurted out, looking exhausted. “She won’t tell us who the father is, but we now know he is married with children and he broke up with her.”
“Married? How old is he?” Cain scowled, anger growing in his gut. “He’s going to jail. I don’t care if he’s eighteen and close to her age. If he’s married with kids, then he’s much more experienced than Bianca and manipulated her. Statutory rape at the very least.”
“I don’t think he’s close to her age.” Mal sniffled. “He groomed her. She said he told her not to tell anyone about them being together because they wouldn’t understand, especially her mom. He isolated her and lied to her. Then he abandoned her when she told him she’s pregnant.”
“God, she’s pregnant.” Cain groaned. “She’s too young.”
“That’s why she asked me to adopt the baby.” Mal’s smile was strained. “She says she’ll make a better big sister than a mother right now.”
Cain rubbed his face, then pulled Mal back into his arms. “So, we are going to be fathers? My mother will be happy.”
“We?” Mal’s eyes lit with hope. “You don’t want to break up with me?”
Cain arched a brow. “Do you doubt me?”
