To stop myself from surrendering to him, I closed my eyes. They snapped open after his lips grazed my neck.

“I’m trying to protect you, Weirdo. Promise me,” he whispered into my ear.

My heart rhythm ramped up as the wetness from his lips lingered on my skin.

“Erin.”

“I promise,” I falsely agreed.

Marquise released me until he opened my car door. He tangled our hands again after he helped me out the passenger seat. This is not what friends do,played in my head as he led us to the elevator. I pressed my floor.

“We’re only stopping by your spot to get you some items and that’s all,” he said.

I turned my body in protest, snatching my hand away.

“If you can put your lipstick on for them, you can stay the week with me,” he said.

Marquise followed me out of the elevator. He shadowed my movements from the moment we entered the condo and while I packed. I loaded enough clothes for one night.

“You’re short a few outfits,” he said, as he stood beside the bed.

I took inventory of his mood and decided it wasn’t worth the argument. I moved back to my drawers, selecting additional apparel.

“This doesn’t have to be hard,” he said as I bumped into him.

I zipped the bag, and he grabbed it and my hand, moving us towards the door.

As the numbers grew in the elevator, I prayed Jhae’s ass was sleeping. I preferred my walk of shame to be conductedin silence. The doors opened with us still connected, regardless of the multiple attempts I made to free myself. With the lights being off, the view of the city shined through the living room window. I moved in the direction of his bedroom to be pulled back.

“After you shower, let’s game,” he suggested.

“It’s after midnight. I’m going to bed,” I said, twisting my hand to find freedom.

“You made time for them, make time for me,” Marquise requested.

I kicked off my shoes before I entered the bathroom. As I removed my makeup, my phone danced across the vanity.

Tracy

Y’all fucking?

I tossed my head backward as I scrambled for a way to defend myself.

Me

No, only friends. He is crazy.

Tracy

Ha. He was pissed about you being at the party.

Tracy

You didn’t tell me bye or nothing.

Replaying the interaction between Marquise and I, he didn’t allow any reaction time. He gripped my hand andpulledmy ass through the crowd.
