“Thebestbirthday.”

“How does it feel to be fifty?”

“I’m not officially fifty until Wednesday.” Turning around in Melanie’s arms, Cameron felt Melanie’s hands move down to her ass as she gently squeezed.

“You’re so old,” Melanie giggled.

“Are we still going out for dinner for my actual birthday?”

“Have I ever missed your birthday?”

“You missed the first twenty-five.”

Melanie poured. “That’s not fair. I didn’t know you then.”

“Well,” Cameron playfully twirled Melanie’s hair around her finger, “you still missed them.”

“But I’ve never missed Jonah or Dylan’s birthdays.”

Cameron melted at Melanie’s words. She loved Jonah and Dylan so damn much that it made Cameron’s heart want to explode. When she decided to have kids on her own, she worried her kids would miss out on all the love they could have gotten from two parents. But looking back, they had that love all along from their Aunt Mel.

“I love how much you love them.”

“They’re the best kids.” Leaning in, Melanie kissed Cameron’s lips. Then her chin. Then her ear. “And their mom is pretty damn great, too.”

“I hear she’s got a super hot girlfriend.”

“Is that so?”

“Ahem,” Vera dramatically cleared her throat, causing them to swiftly separate. “Geez, you two are worse than Mason.”

“Hey!” Mason groaned, turning the corner into the kitchen. “I didn’t do anything this time.”

“We’re getting ready to leave and just wanted to say good night and happy early birthday.”

“Thanks, Vera.” Cameron hugged her friend. “Thank you for everything.”

“You’re welcome, Cam.”

After saying goodbye to the Mackenzies, Melanie and Cameron were left alone in the kitchen once more. Thanks to everyone’s help, the entire house was almost back to being spotless. The only remains of the party were the balloons and the wine bottles and empty glasses still on the kitchen island.

“Thank you so much for tonight, Mel.” Wrapping her arms around Melanie’s neck, Cameron let her hold her tight. “You’re the best.”

“Only the best for my girl.” Melanie kissed her cheek before pulling away. In her eyes, Cameron could almost see the question they both wanted to ask.

“Mel.”

“Cam.” Licking her lips, Melanie sighed. “I want to ask you something.”

“I am assuming it’s the same thing I want to ask you.”

“But I don’t want to overstep and I want you to know you can stay and there won’t be any hard feelings.”

“Yes.”

Melanie’s brow furrowed. “What?”

“Yes, I want you to spend the night.” Cameron waited for her words to fully sink in with Melanie before continuing. “I know we haven’t done that yet and I want to talk to the kids about it soon. But tonight, I just want to fall asleep in my girlfriend’s arms.”
