“What are the terms exactly?” Talonis asks.

“You made a deal with that halfbreed?” Kael asks me.

Everyone talks over the previous one so that all of their question blend together. But I get the general gist of it; none of them are happy that we made a blood deal together. The only one who doesn’t seem surprised or angry by it is Sylara. She stands against the wall, casually watching all of us.Did Nyx tell her, or is she just not bothered by the idea of it?

“I’m not explaining the terms of the deal to any of you. It’s between me and Nyx, but you will allow Kael to remain here with us if you want my cooperation.”

“The blood deal ensures your cooperation, or did you already forget the nausea from earlier?” He raises his eyebrows.

“I’ll kill you and then the blood deal won’t matter.”

He folds his arms across his chest and smirks. “I like that your confidence has built quickly, and you believe you’re capable of killing me now.”

“All I had to do was mark you first during the marking ceremony and prove you aren’t my mate.”

The room chills into an icy silence. All eyes turn to Nyx. To see what he’ll say. If he’ll call my bluff.

“All I was going to say is that Kael can’t stay without joining the Bloodmoon pack. For an outsider to stay with us, they must either belong to an ally pack or pledge themselves to us through initiation. Since the Bloodmoon pack currently trusts no otherpacks as allies, his only choice would be to join the pack.” Nyx looks from me to Kael. “But as he’s already had a stay with us, he knows the rules already. It’s why last time he stayed—”

“You mean kidnapped!” I interrupt him.

He nods. “Last time he was here, I had to have a guard on him at all times, day and night. We don’t have the resources to do that again with the impending war that seems to be brewing. So if he stays, he has to initiate first.”

“Done,” Kael says.

I blink at him. “Are you sure?”

“Yes, I don’t care what pack I belong to, I just want to be with you.”

I grin up at him and nestle into his side as his broad arm wraps over my shoulders. Nyx studies the movement but says nothing.

“Tomorrow then,” he says.

“Tomorrow,” Kael answers.

“Did Ambrose send any messages along with you when he sent you to act as a guard dog?” Nyx asks.

“No,” Kael answers.

I’m about to say that I’m done training for the day and want to return to my room with Kael and catch up, when I feel the warm thread sparking to life in my mind.“I’ll do anything for you, my mate, my queen. Anything. I’m still here.”

I close my eyes, trying to block the warmth from spreading through my head just like I did with Nyx, but end up shedding a tear instead. I’m not ready to face the warmth. Not ready to follow that thread and learn how it intertwines with mine to block Ambrose out. I’m just not ready to deal with him at all.

I open my eyes and see Nyx staring at me as if he knows. But he can’t know. I said nothing. And yet…

“How?”I ask in his mind.

“Sometimes I can feel him in your mind when I’m here, too.”

I frown, and the nausea returns. I want nothing more than to hide away with Kael. Hide away from the world. But the fucking deal I made won’t allow it.

“Clear the room so we can talk about my dreams.”

Chapter 14

Nyx

Sylara moves to my right side as we watch Kael and Lumi embrace again.
