“Please,” Otto says, his voice a low murmur. “One drink. I’ll even schedule your Uber home so that we have an end time if that makes you more comfortable.”

Warning bells are going off all over the place, and if I wasn’t trained in highly specialized martial arts, it would be an automatic ‘no.’ But for whatever reason, they seem to need this as much as I do.

A release.

One night before my life changes forever.

Lachlan pulls me against his body. His arms wrap around my waist, and I suddenly feel like I’m on fire. I’ve never had this kind of reaction to anyone before. Bending down, his lips graze my temple.

“When’s the last time you did something spontaneous, pet?”

And damn him, because I’m seriously considering it.

This iscrazy.Like,‘this-is-how-she-got-murdered’insane.

I shouldn’t do this. I don’t know anything about them other than their names. They could be murderers or psychopaths. There’s no telling what kinds of skeletons could be in their closets–and what kinds of things I’d be subjected to if I were to go home with them.

Then again, I highly doubt they expect me to be armed with not one but two knives–one in my handbag and one inside a secret pocket of my bra.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that Lachlan is right. After tomorrow, everything will change for me. My new job is not a normal job. Highly secretive and important, it will require all of my brain power both physically and mentally. I’d accepted the job knowing that it would completely take over my life.

Becoming a Lady of Darkness… it’s not for the faint of heart.

The screening process was rigorous as hell, but somehow, I scored the second highest in a vast sea of applicants. I hadn’t met any of the other members beside Quinn, but that would change tomorrow.

I’d start the process of becoming death incarnate–feared, revered, and formidable.

After tomorrow, people in certain circles might certainly know whoIwas.

The new me, at least.

Tonight was likely my last night of anonymity.

It was now or never.

The opportunity to give into temptation just once is too tempting to pass up.

“One drink,” I tell them, holding one finger up for emphasis.

Lachlan smirks. “One drink. I promise.”

CHAPTER 3

Otto

The mystery girls follow us back to my flat, whispering with her friend the entire way. The redheaded man is with the dark-haired one, which is just as well. She didn’t seem interested in us–not like the little, silver one.

Something about her is so fucking enticing.

And it’s not just her fiery blue eyes and silver hair, either. There’s something beguiling about the way she holds herself. It’s like she’s always on the offensive, always looking for an exit. It makes me want to take care of her, to make her feel good. I don’t pity her, but a beautiful woman like that should not spend her life afraid of everything. And if I can change that, why not?

Max and Lachlan chat up ahead of me as we walk through SoHo. We’re not far from the club, and once we arrive in front of an old townhouse, I pull my keys out and walk up to the door. Everyone follows me inside and I flick the lights on.

“Wow,” the silver mystery girl says, looking around. “Youlivehere?” she asks. Her eyes immediately flit up to the camera bythe door before those eyes float over Max’s high-tech, state-of-the-art security system on the wall.

Interesting that she would check for that first.

“It was our parents’ house,” I answer, as if that explains everything.
