Her breathing hitched, and Dan had to give one last push.

“And to think all of you were so careful at the charity, avoiding shaking my hand.” He stared at her. “You all knew why I was there, didn’t you? That’s why you pulled away so fast just now, as though my touch burned you. Because you knew you couldn’t hide anything from me.” That last part was a lie—Dan knew his gift could be hit or miss—but he wanted to leave her rattled.

“Leave. Now,” she choked.

Dan and Riley followed Gary out of the conference room.

As soon as they were outside, Gary turned to him, his eyes sparkling.

“Way to go. You were amazing.”

Dan shook his head. “It was a team effort.”

“But you didn’t see who the killer was?” Riley fired him a hopeful glance.

“Unfortunately, no. But her reactions to our questions at the end told me one vital thing.” Dan smiled at them. “We’re on the right track. And maybe if we rattle them enough, they’ll lead us to the killer.”

Time to apply more pressure—until one of them cracked.

AS SOONas I clicked Answer, Amy dove in.

“I have to see you. We need to talk.”

“Happy Holidays to you too, Amy. Happy New Year’s, while I’m at it. I must have missed your calls somehow.”

“That psychic. Heknows, I tell you.”

Nothing changes.Sarcasm always went right over her head, even when we were students. Then her words struck home.

“Mitchell and Porter? They’ve been to see you?” I’d expected them to question Greg. That made sense. But Amy? Why her? Were they interviewingallMurphy’s coworkers?

Or had they already made the connection between—

I dismissed that idea. They couldn’t possibly have made that big a leap so soon.

“Three days ago. There was another detective with them.”

“And they haven’t been back since then?”

“No.”

I smiled. “Then it was nothing but a fishing expedition.”

“And what if he catches something? They’ve interviewed Jennifer too. And Greg. They’re just as nervous about this as I am. We should never have agreed to this.”

The fear curdling her voice made me sick to my stomach.

No fucking backbone.

“Hey,nowyou all get consciences, after I did all the dirty work? No, I willnotmeet you. Any of you. Not if they’re watching us.” I laughed. “Well, they’re watchingyou. They don’t know about me.”

“I wouldn’t be too sure about that,” Amy blurted. “They know I booked a table for five. They know someone else bought those tickets. Hell, they even asked Jennifer if she organized the camping trip.”

If Amy had doneanythingto cause me to show up on the police’s radar, her death would be painful.
