Creating a perfect seal.

Well, that description wasn’t very romantic.

“Do you hear me?” She was still berating him as they walked through the front door toward their waiting carriage. “You are a hound.”

“Never said I wasn’t.” His heart was still pounding, and it took him great effort to quell the bonfire raging inside him. “But I am still going to protect you with my life.”

She took a deep breath and set a delicate, gloved hand across her flushed cheek. “Dear heaven, look what you’ve done. My face is in flames.”

His smile was utterly wicked as he said, “It wasn’t your face I was trying to light on fire.”

He silently kicked himself for behaving like an arse. How could he have said such a thing to the sweet girl? She really did have him turned inside out.

He ought to apologize but doubted she would accept it.

Her eyes were ablaze.

Of course, they were ablaze with anger.

What was it about Grace he could not resist?

Well, one thing for certain, he was takingThe Book of Lovealong with them on their journey.

He could not even catch his blasted breath.

This is how she left him, breathless and on fire.

She wasn’t even trying to seduce him.

But those soft, sweet lips.

Her incredible eyes.

The delicate shape of her body.

This is what frustrated him most, because the more she buttoned up and bundled up, the more he wanted to peel those layers off her and discover what lay beneath.

In theory, he knew.

He had seen plenty of naked women.

But Grace would not be like the others.

She would be pink and soft, and when he touched her skin with his tongue, she would taste as sweet as newly ripened strawberries.

“You cannot kiss me whenever it is convenient for you,” she said, trying to shake off his assistance as they neared the carriage.

But a flash of metal caught his attention.

He grabbed her by the waist and pushed her to the ground as shots resounded and scared the carriage horses.

“Ack! What–”

“Keep down!”

The carriage rocked back and forth wildly as the horses reared and bucked in panic. Rivers tried to control the team. At the same moment, two men converged on Deklan with weapons drawn.

He went on the attack, punching the first assailant in the throat and quickly disarming him. He grabbed the pistol the man was pointing at him and used it to shoot the other in the arm as he was about to plunge a knife into Deklan’s neck.
