Never in his life had he wanted anything as much as Alifair and certainly no other woman. Passing on the chance to fulfill his fantasies and take her completely hurt more than losing a limb but restored a part of his soul.
He dried off and dressed, glad his short hair required so little maintenance, then returned to the bed. He did his best not to disturb her while he stretched out and pulled her over against him.
She snuggled up, murmuring some gibberish.
He smiled and brushed the hair off her face. “You will sleep now.”
She tried to make light of being together tonight as if it were the last night of their lives, but Alifair was not like the last woman he’d known who had an ulterior motive for being with him and wanted only sex.
On the other hand, he was not like her people either. He carried the blood of many deaths on his hands.
But he’d made an angel happy tonight.
Chapter 27
Alifair studied thewagon decorated to appear like a gypsy trader and moving along a beaten-down trail. When sunlight flashed just right, she saw Rez and Magdelina huddled together on one side.
Then a lion stuck its head out the back, looking all around.
Had Krol shifted?
She struggled to stay with the wagon, watching for landmarks. Exhaustion pulled at her until she was deep asleep again. Wind howling through the trees dragged her back to the surface.
The dream had returned with the wagon in a different location but still on a dirt path.
The lion jumped from the wagon and trotted close behind, its big head swinging from side to side, then staring up at the overcast sky. Krol’s Lammogo flew overhead, a creature that truly should not exist.
Finally, the wagon entered an open area with the crumbling remains of another castle. Is that where they were now?
Bosse stepped into view with his back to her. He was looking for something.
How could he be there and here with her?
A movement in the wagon pulled her attention back to the opening at the rear.
Magdelina stuck her head out and... looked straight at Alifair, who jerked back.
